2019 Elections: Muslim body warns politicians on do-or-die actions

A leading Nigerian faith-based organisation, The Muslim Congress (TMC) has warned politicians seeking for political offices in the forthcoming general elections against do-or-die actions.

The Amir of the Congress, Dr Lukman AbdurRaheem made the call during a Saturday, January 12, 2019 quarterly press conference, currently going on at the TMC Secretariat, Jibowu, Lagos.

The call is coming days after the Presidency, alongside the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) assured Nigerians and the international community of their resolve to conduct credible, free and fair elections in the forthcoming polls.

Dr Lukman said that, with the confirmation from the presidency and the electoral body, no politician should see the 2019 elections slated for Saturday, February 16 and Saturday March 2, 2019 respectively as a do-or-die affair.

Dr AbdurRaheem said: “Let us believe these assurances and play our part in ensuring a peaceful election.”

The varsity don also warned against violence, vote buying and vote selling, calling on INEC staff, security personnel and politicians to conduct themselves in the best possible manner, since the election is a serious indicator of the progress and survival of the nation.

He cautioned against circulation of unofficial and fake results on the social media, saying that such act is capable of breaching public peace.

The Muslim Congress, a group with members across Nigeria, also urged religious leaders and traditional rulers to use their respected offices in creating an atmosphere of peace and security.
