The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has given a piece of advise to people who beg for alms or other forms of assistance from their family members, relatives and others.
He said they should instead direct their begging to the government.
Sanusi made the call on Saturday, February 22, at the National Conference on Alarammomi (Qur’anic Teachers) organised by Centre for Qur’anic Reciters in Nigeria, NAN reports.
The emir asked parents to stop sending their children to Almajiri schools as they could also study the Qur’an at their schools in their respective communities.
He said if they must be sent to such schools, necessary provisions to ensure their wellbeing and welfare must be made by the parents.
He said if such provisions are not made, the children will end up begging for food and alms.
Quoting verses from the Holy Qur’an and Hadith, Sanusi said begging is not allowed in Islam as he noted that whoever begs, would resurrect on the day of judgement without flesh on his face.
He said: “Begging is disallowed in Islam and if you must beg for alms beg the government, not individuals or relatives.”
Sanusi said this is because it is the government’s responsibilty to take care of the welfare and wellbeing of citizens.
According to him, cutting firewood and selling it to earn a living is a better option than begging.
“Those who beg or seek assistance from individuals will be resurrected on the day of judgement without meat/flesh on their faces,” he added.
The monarch stated that those saying begging is not prohibited in Islam are just misleading others.
He said individuals, relatives or neighbours can decide to help out if the wish but it is not necessary.
Sanusi pleaded with the government at all levels to check such menaces in society through social protection programmes like cash transfer and many more.
