Meet 20 Muslim Scholars who were bachelors throughout their lives

Deep Sigh!

I came across the book العلماء العزاب الذين آثروا العلم على الزواج written by عبد الفتاح أبو غدة in December 2019. It is a book on the biographies of Muslim scholars who did not marry throughout their lives. Although marriage is highly recommended in all Abrahamic religions, I was particularly fascinated reading the biographies of scholars who were outliers and remained bachelors throughout their lives while pursuing scholarship.

Here is a list of the 20 Muslim scholars (19 Males, 1 Female):

He was a transmitter of different Islamic traditions. His narrations were cited by Muslim historians and hagiographers including Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq. He died in 131 AH/748-749 AD.

2. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥman Yūnus ibn Ḥabib al-Baṣrī يونس بن حبيب البصري He was an expert on Arabic grammar. He died in 182 AH/798 AD.

He was one of the narrators of Ḥadīth from Kufa in Iraq. He died in 203 AH/818-819 AD.

A classical polymath best known for his Quranic exegesis He wrote on diverse subjects including mathematics, medicine and jurisprudence. He died in 310 AH/ 922-923 AD.

7. Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad b. He was an eminent Arab philologist of the ʿAbbāsid period. He is the author of the book on Arabic idiomatic expressions al-Zāhir fī maʿānī kalimāt al-nās He died in 328 AH/ 939-940 AD.

I hope this piece is not a justification for celibacy in Islam because we have valid references on necessity and obligation of marriage as a Sunnah and completion of 50 percent of faith.
How can we be celebrating celibacy on the basis of scholarship when marriage is one of the three things considered expedient and not to be delayed? Can’t we go through several quranic instructions on marriage. I don’t want to call this post a needless intellectual perversion but an ordinary excursion for scholastic amusement.

For whatever it is, it serves no purpose for enhancing our spirituality.

Asalam alaekum, the most important thing is that all the above listed scholars strongly agreed that Nikkah is Sunnat Muhakadah. So, the reason for them not married is best known to them. May Almighty Allah continue to bless them for their contributions to the development of Islam, Muslims and the world at large.
