Sheikh Najeemdeen Binuyo, renowned Islamic scholar and author, dies at 96

The Lagos Mainland Muslim Community has announced the death of a renowned islamic scholar and author, Sheikh Najeemdeen Adegbite Binuyo.

In a statement signed by Abdullah Binuyo, the late Islamic scholar returned to his Creator, Allah in the early hours of Tuesday, January 24.

The statement also added that Janazah (funeral prayer) will be held for him on Tuesday afternoon, by 1:00pm (after Zuhr) at the Lagos State Secretariat Masjid, Alausa – Lagos,

Muslim News gathered that his remains will be laid to rest later today at the Lagos Mainland Muslim Community Cemetery at Ofada (near Prime Estate) off Papalanto-Sagamu Road.

He is survived by his highly devoted wife, Alhaja Sidiquat Binuyo and children, one of whom is the former Deputy Chief of Staff to the erstwhile Governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola, Prince Abdullahi Adeyanju Binuyo

Some of the books he authored include Teachings of Islam 1,2,3; Modern Methods of Arabic Studies 1,2,3; and Books on Comparative Religion and Analysis, among others.

“We beseech Allah, the Most High, to forgive and admit him into His mercy. Ameen”, the statement ended.

Muslim community mourns

Respected Muslim leader and Baba Adinni of Lagos, Sheikh Afeez Abou paid tribute to the late Binuyo, saying, “That was the most disciplined man I knew when he was alive”.

Professor of Economics, Lagos State University, LASU, Prof Jameelah O. Yaqub, said, “Baba always found excuses for people. He was never annoyed with people. He had a big heart, and he took everyone as his child. He was a committed father to all. May Allah overlook his shortcomings and admit him into aljanatul firdaus.”

Also, Professor Tunde Yaqub from department of Arabic and Linguistics, LASU, described Sheikh Binuyo as a fist class ‘abiyamo’, stressing that the vaccum created by his demise is irreplaceable.

The Executive Chairman, MPAC, Disu Kamor, also described him as a man of unassailable prominence in both piety and service to the nation.

“Truly, death can kill a man, but it cannot kill his good works. Innah lilah wa innah ilehi rajihun.”

According to Former Vice Chancellor,  Osun State University, Prof. Labo Popoola, “There goes a great Prince, an erudite scholar, a decent, principled and charismatic patriarch. By Baba’s passing, a huge gap has been created in Inisa and the Islamic world. Such icons pass by once in our lifetime. May he be granted Aljannah Fridaus.”

In his tribute, the Deputy National President 1, University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni Association (UMA) and Chairman, FCT Chapter, Alhaji Aliu Akoshile said Sheikh Binuyo’s death is a great loss to the Muslim Ummah.

He commiserated with his entire family and condoled with one of his daughters, Alhaja Muinat Taoheed Amusan (née Binuyo), who is the Vice Chairman of UMA, FCT Chapter, praying Allah (SWT) to grant her the strength to bear the certainty of the loss. Aamin.

According to him, “I’ve known him since the early 1980s. The late Sheikh Binuyo was a father figure and teacher to many youths as he combined profound erudition with exemplary piety, humility and generosity.

Alhaji Akoshile described Sheikh Binuyo as an exemplified inspirational leadership of a reticent scholar whose pedagogy helped a generation of youths to find their bearings at the intersection of permissive modernism and sanctimonious extremism.

“May Allah (SWT) accept his return with mercy, sanctify him with forgiveness and accept him into aljannah firdaws. Aamin.”, he added.
