Imam Masjid Al-Nabawi warns against celebrating Mawlidun Nabiyy, says it’s disrespectful to Prophet

The Imam of Masjid Al-Nabawi, Madinah, Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Ali Al-Hudaify, has cautioned Muslims against celebrating Mawlidun Nabiyy (the birthday of Prophet Muhammad).

Sheikh Al-Hudaify who is also the Khateeb of Masjid Al-Nabawi, Islam’s second holiest mosque, said the celebration is a disrespect to the Prophet (SAW).

He made this statement during his last Friday khutbah (sermon) on September 13, 2024, where he emphasised that the generation of Islam’s righteous predecessors never celebrated Mawlidun Nabiyy.

“It would be considered disrespectful to the Prophet (PBUH) to engage in innovations, such as celebrating his birthday (Mawlid),” he said, as quoted on Haramain social media.

It is the right of the Prophet that we love him and prioritize this love over everything else, this [love] includes obeying what he commanded us with, and avoiding what he prohibited.

“That generation from the righteous predecessors, the greatest generation, the generation that journeyed with the Prophet (SAW) among the Muhajireen and Ansar, never even heard of the Mawlid [let alone practiced it], yet they were virtuous and succeeded [both in this life and the next].

“They were victorious because they strictly followed and acted upon the Sunnah of the Prophet and avoided all kinds of innovation.”

The scholar meanwhile said it is the duty of all Muslims to love the Prophet (PBUH), especially by following what he commanded us to do, and avoiding what he prohibited.

“It is the right of the Prophet (PBUH) that we love him and prioritize this love over everything else, this [love] includes obeying what he commanded us with, and avoiding what he prohibited.

“It also includes believing in his teachings, and worshiping Allah only and according to His law, he added.

“None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to you than your father, your children, and everyone else.”

(Reported by Bukhari and Muslim).

Imam Al-Hudaify prayed Allah to destroy innovations and make the faithful steadfast upon Islam.

He also remembered Palestinians in his prayer, beseeching Allah to relieve their calamities.

He said: “O Allah, destroy the innovations that oppose Your religion till the end of time.

“O Allah, make us steadfast upon Your religion.

“O Allah, relieve the Muslims of all their hardships and calamities, remove all the afflictions and difficulties from the land of Palestine, and defeat Your enemies.”
