A renowned scholar from the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Arts, Lagos State University, Ojo, Dr Saheed Timehin has enjoined Muslims to allow their mosques to also function as educational and learning centers beyond being prayer grounds.
Speaking at the official commissioning of Jama-at-ul-Islamiyyah of Nigeria, Division 7 Central Mosque in Magodo, Lagos, over the weekend, Dr. Timehin noted that a mosque is a place dedicated to the worship of Allah.
Dr. Timehin who spoke on the topic: “The Role of Mosques As Centres For Education And Social Engagement” also stated that mosques can also serve different purposes including being educational and research centers, as seen in many countries of the world.
The Don stressed that a mosque is not just about religion, adding that the first university in the world started from a mosque.
Dr Timehin said that in those days, all mosques had libraries, classrooms and that scholars lived there, adding that it was a place for Muslims to resolve issues just as the first parliament in Islam started from a mosque.
Lagos promises continuous support to Jama-at-ul-Islamiyya
The Special Guest of Honour at the event, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state, who was represented by Hon. Ibrahim Olanrewanju Layode, Commissioner for Home Affairs, commended the organisation on the project, while promising to continue to promote Islamic religion in the state.
It’s the largest mosque in Nigeria: President
President of the jamaat, Alhaji (Engr.) Hashim Oyekan described the event as historic and joyous, saying that the monumental edifice stands as the largest mosque built by the organisation across Nigeria.
He acknowledged the unwavering support of the Lagos State Government for the allocation of that parcel of land to the jamaat.
According to him, “We must recognise the contributions of our past leaders, both living and departed, whose vision and sacrifices laid the foundation for this project. May Allah (SWT) reward them abundantly and accept their deeds as acts of Ibadah.
“A special appreciation goes to the members of the Mosque Building Committee, ably chaired by Dr. Adedeji, whose tireless efforts, meticulous planning, and dedication have brought this project to fruition. From inception to completion, your commitment has been exemplary. Jazakumullahu Khairan.
* Proposes N500 million fund raising for Jamaat Int’l School
The President also reminded the distinguished guests at the event that work is still ongoing at the newly commissioned mosque, saying that the Jamaat has resolved to use the remaining space to build international schools.
Engr. Oyekan announced a launch of N500 million support fund to build a primary and secondary school with state-of-the-art facilities that will serve the community and align with the values of Islam.
“This ambitious project requires our collective effort. I urge each one of us to support this noble cause, both morally and financially. Your generous contributions will not only help us realise this vision but will also stand as an enduring act of Sadaqah Jariyah. Let us give wholeheartedly for the benefit of future generations, knowing that every donation, big or small, will be rewarded by Allah (SWT)”, he added.
