Daniel Amah, policeman who rejected $200,000 bribe, embraces Islam, adopts new name

* The Emir of Kano encourages him on religious obligations

Daniel Amah, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), celebrated nationwide for his act of integrity in rejecting a $200,000 bribe, has embraced Islam in a private ceremony at the palace of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

The event, held on Tuesday, marked Amah’s formal acceptance into the Islamic faith.

He adopted “Muhammad” as his new name.

During the ceremony, the Emir of Kano, speaking in Hausa, encouraged Amah to seek Islamic knowledge and observe the five pillars of Islam: belief in Allah, daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, pilgrimage to Mecca, and Zakat (charitable giving).

The Emir also prayed for divine guidance, urging Amah to uphold his good character and remain respectful and obedient to his parents, regardless of their religious beliefs.

Amah first gained national recognition as the Divisional Police Officer in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State when he refused a $200,000 bribe in April 2022.

The bribe was offered by armed robbery suspects who had stolen over N300 million in a heist targeting a Bureau De Change operator carrying $750,000 in cash.

His integrity earned him widespread acclaim. On November 10, 2022, the Police Service Commission promoted him from Chief Superintendent of Police to Assistant Commissioner of Police.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari also presented him with the prestigious 2022 Public Service Integrity Award, following a recommendation by Bolaji Owasanoye, Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.
