The Criterion to discuss polygyny in Islam at annual seminar

“Polygyny is not compulsory but permissible,” says Amirah

The Lagos State District of The Criterion, an Association of Muslim Women in Business and other Professions, has chosen polygyny, an issue that concerns all Muslims, for discourse at its upcoming annual seminar.

The seminar will be held on Sunday, 12th January 2025, at the Shamsideen Adisa Thomas Mosque, Old Secretariat, Ikeja Lagos.

The Amirah (female president) of the organisation, Hajia Mariam Morenike Saba, in a statement noted that polygyny serves several social and moral purposes, including the protection of widows and orphans, control of immorality and demographic imbalance.

She concluded that although polygyny is a permissible option, it is not a compulsion.

The organisation was established over 30 years ago with activities focusing on education, reproductive health and economic empowerment.
