* We will ensure no talented student is deprived of higher education – Executive Director

One of Nigeria’s leading faith-based non-governmental organisations, Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation, has disbursed the sum of N5,750,000 to support 23 promising but indigent students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in pursuit of their education.

A ceremony to mark the education support initiative held on Wednesday, February 12, at the Biodun Shobanjo Building, Department of Mass Communication, UNILAG, Akoka, Lagos.

Muslim News gathered that the financial aid recipients selected via an impartial and transparent process were drawn from various academic programmes of the Institution.

Speaking at the event, Executive Director of the Foundation and alumnus of the institution, Prince Sulaiman Olagunju, said the Zakat agency firmly believes that investing in education is one of the most impactful ways to uplift individuals, families, and communities.

“Through this initiative, we aim to remove financial barriers that hinder promising students from achieving their full potential,” he added.

Noting that education is not just a necessity, but a fundamental right and a powerful tool for societal transformation, Prince Olagunju said Islam places immense value on knowledge.

“The very first revelation to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the command to “read” (iqra). This underscores the fact that seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim,” he said.

“As part of our mission to promote social welfare and economic empowerment, we are committed to ensuring that financial constraints do not deprive talented students of higher education. This support is not merely charity—it is an investment in the future of our society.

“By providing financial assistance, mentorship, and career guidance, we are equipping these students with the necessary tools to become self-reliant, responsible citizens who will contribute meaningfully to national development.”

… Partnership with UNILAG

The ZSF Executive Director explained that the Foundation partnered with UNILAG’s Dean of Student Affairs in shortlisting the 23 benefiting students.

He said the Dean ensured that only the most deserving students benefited from the initiative, thereby contributing to its success.

Prince Olagunju

“Your efforts in evaluating the students’ academic performance, financial need, and overall potential reflect your deep concern for their well-being and future success. It is through such collaborations that we can make a meaningful impact, ensuring that education remains accessible to those who need it most,” he said.

Olagunju, meanwhile, urged the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity, asking them to pursue their studies with absolute dedication, hard work and integrity.

“Always remember that this support comes from the spirit of Zakat and Sadaqah—an obligation and a trust from the Muslim Ummah to uplift those in need. One day, we hope you will also extend a helping hand to others, continuing the cycle of generosity and empowerment,” he said.

The management of the Zakat Foundation and UNILAG Team

He thanked donors, partners and well-wishers for supporting ZSF to make the initiative a success, praying Allah to reward them abundantly.

“Your generosity is transforming lives. Let us continue working together to ensure that no capable student is left behind due to financial hardship. With knowledge, we empower; with empowerment, we transform; and with transformation, we build a better future for all.”

* DSA Obalola appreciates Zakat Foundation for financial support

The Dean of Student Affairs, who was also the host, Professor Musa Obalola expressed appreciation to the Foundation for the financial support, reiterating the University’s readiness to pursue and drive initiatives that would empower and assist its students.

Prof Obalola

He also identified efforts by the University to create and nurture partnerships that alleviate the challenges being faced by students and their parents/guardians due to the country’s current economic realities.

UNILAG Imam reaffirms Zakat Foundation’s commitment to impacting students welfare

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Foundation’s Board who also doubles as an Imam at the institution, Professor Tajudeen Yusuf explained that the support was facilitated by the UNILAG Student Affairs Division.

Prof Yusuf

While highlighting the organization’s ongoing support for the University community, Professor Yusuf re-affirmed the Foundation’s dedication to positively impacting the welfare of students.

The event was also attended by Deputy Dean I of Students Affairs, Prof (Mrs) Blessing Anyikwa; Deputy Dean II of Students Affairs, Dr. Adesanmi Mogbademu; Principal Assistant Registrar of the Counseling Unit, Mrs. Janet Aregbesola; awardees; among others.
