Ramadan: Zakat Foundation puts smiles on the faces of widows, indigent Muslims in Surulere

One of Nigeria’s leading Zakat agencies, Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation has flagged off her special Ramadan distribution for widows and indigent Muslims in all the districts across the States in Nigeria.

Tagged: “Memorable Ramadan”, it is one of the interventions of the Foundation for widows to take care of themselves and their children during the blessed month of Ramadan.

Muslim News was at the Surulere district, Lagos over the weekend, where the non-governmental organisation disbursed food items and cash to the first batch of her beneficiaries.

The Female Coordinator in the District, Hajia Basheeroh Adeleye-Jawando, said about 40 beneficiaries smiled home with cash and a food pack containing rice, beans, garri, semo, groundnut oil and spaghetti.

She added that with the support of generous Muslims who want to engage in charity to double their reward in Ramadan, the foundation wishes to extend the act of generosity to other indigent Muslims and widows.

While appreciating the donors for their immense support, Hajia Adeleye-Jawando, therefore, called for more support to the foundation to alleviate the burden of financial hardships faced by most families, especially the widows.

According to her, “This initiative is a form of fulfilling our responsibility of caring for those in need, especially in this holy month of Ramadan as is our slogan, ‘caring, creating socio-economic balance.

“We thank our donors immensely, may Allah reward them abundantly and let this count heavily on their scale of good deeds. We call on others to support the Foundation in alleviating the burden of financial hardships faced by most families, especially widows.”

The Female Coordinator noted it’s easy to identify those in need due to the Foundation years of humanitarian support at the grassroots across all local governments in Lagos and other States of the Federation.

“Since we are active at the grassroots, we have beneficiaries across our local communities, Lawanson, Aguda, Ijesha, Orile, Gambia centres, comforting hands (NGO of Widows majorly) and through personal relationships with people.

“We also organise mosque iftar and Eid pack for kids. We are using this medium to seek collaborations and support from individuals and organisations,” she added.

She called on the beneficiaries to express gratitude to Allah for this opportunity and pray for the donors, the organization and the volunteers for more strength and will.

The Female Coordinator urged them to give back to the society if they were endowed, saying, “It’s for the betterment of the society at large.

“Lastly, everyone should take this Ramadan as a period of change to be better through closeness to Allah and goodness to humanity for a better society,” she added.

Disbursement was well-coordinated: Gawata

Also speaking, Ustadh Lukman Gawata, a Field Officer with the Foundation, lauded the district for the successful coordination of the disbursement in Surulere.

He disclosed that the initiative started about five years ago to provide succour for widows and their children during Ramadan, adding, “In the nearest future, we hope what will be given to them will take them throughout Ramadan.”

According to him, “We have about 19 districts in Lagos, which is an administrative structure that is being utilised by the Foundation. This is the Surulere district, and many widows benefitted today. It’s also ongoing in other districts and by God’s grace, it will get across all states of the federation.”
