Eating dates improves brain functionality, says naturopathic physician

* Says they provide a natural source of energy for fasting Muslims

Dates are a common fruit in our part of the world. Over the years, people have snacked on them. Some, however, do not know the nutritional and health benefits attached to dates beyond just snacking on them.

Naturopathic physician, Dr. Rofiah Surajudeen says dates improve the functionality of the brain, promote bone health, and aid good digestion.

Dr. Rofiah is the Founder of dRoyin Plus, a full-time business that deals in the provision of high-quality dates in bags, kilogrammes, and paint containers – during and after Ramadan.

She said there are over 600 varieties of dates around the globe.

According to her, some of the varieties are Ajwaa, Klahas, Mabroom, Zahidi, Sagia, Sukhari, Safawi, Kudiri, Anbara, Medjool, and Dabinu dates, among others.

She said, Ajwaa dates are dark brown and almost black. It helps control cholesterol and blood pressure while also supporting cardiovascular health. Ajwaa dates are a shield against harm, including magic and poison.

Quoting the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the CEO of dRoyin Plus said anyone who eats seven ‘Ajwaa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them.

She described Medjool as the king of dates, saying that it increases the potassium in human’s diet and supports the nervous system function.

“This type of dates are also good for men’s sexual performance,” she added.

As for dabidun dates, which are common in Nigeria, Dr. Rofiah said they have the ability to increase the production of insulin and also helps reduce the rate of absorption of glucose from the intestine, adding that “A diabetic patient can take dabidun in moderation.”

Speaking further,a green pharmacist who works with the Rcure Holistic Health Consult, Oshodi, Lagos, said dates do not just have physical health benefits; they also have spiritual significance for Muslims.

“Breaking our fast with dates connects us to the practices of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), fostering a sense of unity and continuity with the early Muslim community.

  1. Baarakallahu fihi. Very nice. Dates has a lot of benefits. I read that the sahabah feeds on dates when there’s no food during war and they survived. I sell dates but in small quantity. And I know only two types of dates, dabinu and Ajwa. I’ll like to learn more from you. Thanks
