IWD2025: Honour women, uphold justice: Al-Mu’minaāt calls for equity, solidarity

The Believing Women Organization in Nigeria participated in the pro-palestinian advocacy during the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza

As the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, Al-Mu’minaāt (The Believing Women) Organisation, National Headquarters, has extended warm felicitations to women across the globe, acknowledging their valuable contributions to society.

The group emphasized the importance of justice, dignity, and equity while reaffirming the role of Islam in empowering women long before modern movements for gender rights emerged.

In a statement signed by the National Amirah, Hajia Jelilah Abdulhamid, Al-Mu’minaāt highlighted how Islam has always safeguarded women’s rights—granting them access to education, inheritance, ownership, leadership, and protection.

“Long before the world recognized women’s rights, Islam had already elevated the status of women,” the statement noted, referencing the Qur’anic verse:

“And do not wish for that by which Allah has preferred some of you over others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah of His bounty. Indeed, Allah is ever, of all things, Knowing.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:32)

The organisation further pointed to the great Muslim women of history—Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, a trailblazing entrepreneur and the first believer in Islam; Aisha bint Abi Bakr, an exemplary scholar; Fatimah bint Muhammad, a model of piety; and Asma bint Abu Bakr, known for her courage and sacrifice—as timeless symbols of women’s empowerment.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself emphasized the significance of treating women with dignity, stating:

“The best of you are those who are best to their women.” (Tirmidhi, 1162)

Al-Mu’minaāt urged individuals, families, and societies to uphold the balance that Islam prescribes regarding women’s rights, free from cultural distortions or modern extremes.

“Train a woman, and you have trained a nation. When a society thrives, look at the women therein,” the group stated, calling on governments to invest more in women’s development for a better and more just society.

While celebrating the achievements of women globally, the organisation dedicated this year’s IWD message to the resilient women of Palestine. It condemned in the strongest terms the ongoing violence against women and children in Gaza, describing it as genocide.

Hajia Jelilat Abdul Hamid

“As we recognise the strength and contributions of women, we must not turn a blind eye to the suffering of our sisters in Palestine. Their steadfastness in the face of oppression is a testament to the unbreakable spirit of womanhood,” the statement declared.

The group reiterated that despite ongoing challenges such as discrimination, violence, and lack of access to education, Islam provides comprehensive solutions by valuing women’s contributions, ensuring their protection, and fostering a society where they can thrive spiritually, intellectually, and economically.

“True success lies in aligning with the principles set by our Creator. In doing so, we pave the way for a just and balanced society,” the statement concluded.

Al-Mu’minaāt reaffirmed its commitment to the empowerment, education, and upliftment of women in accordance with Islamic teachings and prayed for wisdom and strength in upholding the dignity of women for generations to come.
