The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has sent a solidarity message to Muslims facing discrimination, marginalisation, and persecution around the world on the occasion of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, 15th March.
In a statement signed by its Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, MPAC said Islamophobia is a societal ill that threatens peace globally, while assuring the affected Muslims that they are not alone.
“Islamophobia manifests in various forms, from hate speech and discriminatory policies to violent attacks and systemic marginalisation. It is our collective responsibility to confront and challenge this scourge, ensuring that Muslims can live their lives with dignity, respect, and freedom from fear,” the statement read.
Kamor said MPAC, a Muslim advocacy group in Nigeria, is working tirelessly to combat Islamophobia in Nigeria.
He said they engage in advocacy, education, and community outreach that promote mutual understanding, challenge stereotypes, and advocate for the rights of Muslims.
Kamor urged Nigerian Muslims to recognise Islamophobia as a common threat and work together to combat it.
“To address this problem effectively, we must be ready to create alliances with people of conscience from other faith and background to reach deeper, and defeat the scourge,” he noted.
“Also, we must:
– Build bridges of understanding and cooperation with the other faith community
– Engage in advocacy and activism to challenge discriminatory policies and practices
– Support and amplify the voices of Muslims who face discrimination and marginalisation
– Promote Islamic values and challenge misconceptions through education and community outreach
“To our Christian friends and allies, we extend an invitation to join us in this critical work. Let us build an alliance of love and understanding to stamp out the ills of Islamophobia and prevent it from festering in our society.”
Kamor restated the commitment of MPAC to working with stakeholders to stamp out Islamophobia.
“To our brothers and sisters who face Islamophobia, we see you, we hear you, and we stand with you. Your struggles are our struggles, and your triumphs are our triumphs. We will continue to work together to build a world where every Muslim can live with dignity, respect, and freedom from fear,” he said.
