VP Shettima, NAHCON boss, stakeholders to converge on Abuja for 2nd National Hajj Summit

* As Nigeria charts new course for sustainable Hajj financing

The Hajj Institute of Nigeria (HIN), in collaboration with the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), is set to host the 2nd National Hajj Stakeholders Summit on 30th April 2025 at the prestigious NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja.

With the theme “Sustainable Hajj Financing: Developing a Resilient Model for Nigerian Pilgrims and Operators,” this high-level gathering aims to reshape the financial landscape of Hajj operations in Nigeria.

The summit is expected to attract prominent stakeholders from across the country and beyond, with His Excellency, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, scheduled to attend as Special Guest of Honour.

The Commission’s Chairman/CEO, Professor Abdullah Saleh Usman will serve as the Chief Host of the event.

Disclosing this, the Rector of the Hajj Institute, Professor Muhammad Nasiruddeen Maiturare, emphasized the strategic importance of this year’s summit in addressing the financial hurdles faced by both pilgrims and Hajj service providers in Nigeria.

Preparations for the event commenced with the inauguration of the Summit’s Steering Committee on April 14th at the HIN conference room.

The committee is chaired by Professor Wasiu O. Gabadeen, Deputy Rector of the Institute.

Other members include HIN Registrar, Prof. Abubakar Ibrahim Jalingo, representatives from NAHCON’s Hajj Savings Scheme (HSS) unit, the States’ and Zones’ Unit, Protocol staff, and the Media arm of NAHCON.

According to the organizers, the summit will “focus on developing appropriate financial sustainability models as a precursor to tackle financial challenges faced by the Hajj Industry in Nigeria.”

The core objectives include developing a sustainable and self-financing model for Hajj operations in Nigeria, creating mechanisms for financial oversight, risk management, and the protection of Hajj funds, and exploring the use of digital platforms and technology to enhance payments, savings tracking, and the overall efficiency of Hajj financial operations.

The two-day summit will feature four intensive sessions, each hosting seven expert panelists, who will engage in deep-dive discussions on innovative solutions for Hajj financing and administration.

Dr. Mansur Muhtar, former Vice President of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Jeddah, and current Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Industry (BOI), will deliver the keynote address.

Dignitaries expected at the summit include HRH, the Sultan of Sokoto, Honourable Ministers, and Members of the National Assembly.

Participants will also include NAHCON Board members and Management, heads of State Pilgrims Welfare Boards/Agencies/Commissions, Private Sector Hajj Operators, as well as representatives from relevant MDAs, Islamic Financial Institutions, and Fintech Companies.

“This summit is hoped to be a launch pad towards building a more resilient, transparent, and sustainable model for Hajj financing in Nigeria,” said Fatima Sanda Usara, Assistant Director, Information and Publications at NAHCON.
