Director of Executive Education and Consulting at Nungu Business School, Dr. Jibril Salaudeen has urged Nigerians embrace entrepreneurship and investment, saying seventy per cent of wealthy individuals globally are not into salary jobs.

He said the trend highlights the vast opportunities available for entrepreneurial ventures in Nigeria.

“We must keep looking around our environment to see where the opportunities are, and where we need to invest. For opportunities to be there, it means there are gaps. These gaps are what result in businesses,” he said.

Dr Salaudeen made remark while addressing the audience as a Guest Speaker at the 2025 Zakat Disbursement Ceremony of the Lekki Muslim Ummah (LEMU), held on Saturday, May 24 at the Lekki Central Mosque, Lagos.

N162 Million Zakat Disbursed to Over 400 Beneficiaries

Muslim News reports that a total of N162 million was disbursed by LEMU to over 400 beneficiaries as part of its Annual Zakat Distribution for 2025. The funds were allocated across various sectors, including education, economic empowerment, health, and debt relief.

LEMU President, Dr. AbdulGaniy Labinjo who noted that this year’s amount surpasses the N105 million disbursed in 2024, emphasized that Zakat payments are welcomed from both members and non-members of the organization.

“Our expectation from the beneficiaries is that they will be happy. That a lot of them will fix their debts. Students in need will be able to pay their fees. Business owners will grow their ventures and eventually become Zakat payers,” he said.

Zakat Committee: Over 500 Applications Received, 400 Selected

Chairman of the LEMU Zakat Committee, Alhaji Yunus Salisu revealed that 400 recipients were shortlisted from the over 500 applications that were received, after careful review by the committee.

“LEMU is trying to use the instrumentality of Zakat to bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots,” he stated, expressing optimism that beneficiaries would one day become contributors.

Don’t Use Zakat for Eid Celebrations or Rituals

Meanwhile, the Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque, Dr. Ridwan Jamiu warned the beneficiaries not to use the Zakat funds for festivities as Eid-Al-Adha approaches.

“It is not compulsory for people without the means to buy sacrificial animals,” he said.

The Imam also advised against financial mismanagement and visiting soothsayers for supposed money rituals, particularly among those who received business capital.

Dr. Jamiu reminded the audience of the Zakat obligation threshold, explaining that anyone with savings equivalent to 595 grams of silver (about N1,020,000) for a period of one year must give 2.5% of the as Zakat.
