TMC hails gallantry of Nigerian troops in foiling terror attack in Niger

…calls for urgent reforms over insecurity across Nigeria

The Muslim Congress (TMC) has raised alarm over the worsening security situation across Nigeria, urging the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive steps to protect citizens and preserve national stability.

In a press release signed by its Amir, Alhaji AbdulWasi’i Taiwo Bangbala, and issued from its headquarters in Anthony, Lagos, TMC described recent violent incidents as a tragic reflection of the country’s fragile security system and the urgent need for a comprehensive reform.

“The Muslim Congress (TMC) expresses profound concern over the escalating security crisis sweeping across the nation, threatening its peace and stability. Recent events have highlighted the fragility of our security architecture and the urgent need for decisive intervention from the highest levels of government,” the statement read.

TMC, however, acknowledged the gallantry of Nigerian troops in foiling a major terrorist attack in Bangi community, Niger State, on June 24, describing the operation as heroic.

“This heroic intervention prevented a potential tragedy and demonstrates the dedication of our armed forces to protect the nation. We pay special tribute to the 17 brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in this operation and extend our deepest condolences to their families and colleagues. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten,” the group stated.

Contrasting this success, the Congress lamented the horrific massacre in Yelewata, Benue State, where over 200 lives were lost in a coordinated attack. “While we celebrate the pockets of successes by our troops, we cannot ignore the systemic vulnerabilities these attacks expose.”

In the press statement, the copy of which was sent to Muslim News on Friday, TMC commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for visiting Benue State in the wake of the tragedy.

“This demonstration of empathy and commitment to finding lasting solutions is highly commendable and reflects the prophetic tradition of leaders standing with their people in times of trial,” the statement said.

Nonetheless, the group maintained that symbolic gestures are no longer enough, citing the brutal murder of 12 travelers from Kaduna State in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

“These victims, en route to a wedding, had their lives brutally extinguished in an act that violates every tenet of humanity and our shared national values. This tragedy serves as a stark wake-up call,” TMC noted.

Reaffirming its stance, the organisation called on President Tinubu to go beyond words and show bold leadership by overhauling the national security framework.

“As Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must now demonstrate true leadership by mobilizing the full might of the state against these purveyors of violence. The time for rhetoric has passed – we demand concrete, decisive action,” the statement charged.

TMC advocated the clearing of terrorist enclaves in forested areas and the establishment of state-level security forces to support federal efforts, especially in high-risk zones.

It also stressed the need to tackle root causes such as unemployment and communal tensions and called for swift justice through special courts.

“We support ongoing efforts to strengthen security architecture across all levels of government. We particularly welcome initiatives to enhance community policing and local security frameworks,” the group emphasized.

Quoting the Qur’an (8:60), TMC reminded the government of its divine duty: “And prepare against them whatever you are able of power… by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy.”

Importantly, the group emphasized that “true security transcends military might,” calling for a national spiritual and moral rebirth. TMC urged the National Orientation Agency and other bodies to champion a value-based campaign promoting “fear of God, the sanctity of human life, mutual respect and accountability for evil actions in this world and the Hereafter.”

The Congress reaffirmed its solidarity with all victims of violence and urged citizens to support government efforts toward national peace.

“Nigerians deserve peace and security – a fundamental responsibility of any government. The time for action is now – our nation’s survival demands nothing less,” the statement concluded.
