In December 2017, when Barrister Firdausa Amasa stood her ground, insisting on wearing her hijab to the Call to Bar ceremony, she wasn’t just fighting for herself. She was fighting for every hijab-wearing Muslim woman who had ever been told, “You don’t belong here.”
Her case made headlines – albeit controversial. But who would stand up for her, not just to defend her rights, but to celebrate her?
That question birthed a vision.
Muslim News, Nigeria’s most authoritative Islamic Newspaper, was born not in a newsroom, but from the zeal, pain, and deep conviction to tell our own stories without compromise.
With no big sponsors, no institutional funding, just faith; and the desire to show the world that Muslims deserve fair, balanced and dignified media representation:
The newspaper, founded by Rawshield PR Media, released her first ever e-cover in July 2018 (exactly seven years ago). The following month, August 2018, a 12-page print edition was dedicated entirely to Firdausa Amasa’s victory, after she was eventually called to Bar with her Hijab.
The front page featured an exclusive interview where she declared: “God has used me to break the hijab struggle for female lawyers.”
In September 2018, Muslim News Nigeria went online with regular Muslim content and in-depth analyses of happenings around the Muslim world. Its website (www.muslimnews.com.ng) is fast becoming the most frequently visited Muslim news website by Muslims, and non-Muslims alike, in Nigeria and across the world.
Like Firdausa Amasa, Allah began to use Muslim News Nigeria, whose slogan is, Promoting Islam, Uniting Muslims, to rewrite the stories of Nigerian Muslims, one headline at a time.
Not because there were no Muslim media outfits before us, there were. But many couldn’t survive the pressure. Some caved in to financial struggles. Others abandoned their Islamic identity altogether, rebranding themselves to appeal to secular audience, leaving a vacuum behind.
But we chose a different path.
When Aminat Yusuf, a hijabi from the Lagos State University, LASU, graduated with a perfect 5.0 CGPA in 2023 and emerged best graduating student, the first in the history of the Faculty of Law, no mainstream media gave her the spotlight she deserved. Yet we did, boldly, proudly, and repeatedly. Just like we did for Firdaus Amasa.
Similar effort was made for countless other veiled Muslim ladies whose names may not be trending but whose triumphs deserve recognition.
Meanwhile, our mission goes beyond the fighting against hijabophobia. Muslim News Nigeria – with over 100,000 followers on Facebook, with about 40,000 on Twitter, and several thousands on other social media platforms, stands for every Muslim whose story had been sidelined, whose pain had been ignored, and whose success had been underreported simply because of their faith.
Whether it’s an hijab-wearing Muslim Sister breaking academic records, a young Muslim entrepreneur innovating in silence, or an oppressed community facing media bias, we are committed to telling their stories, loudly, boldly, and unapologetically.
Because visibility matters. Stories matter. Representation matters.
Muslim News Nigeria – which now runs 16-page monthly print-edition, isn’t just a news platform. It’s a movement. A resistance. A chronicle of excellence rising from the struggle. A platform that says: “If we don’t blow our own trumpet, no one will”.
But here’s what many don’t know:
Behind every issue we publish, every headline we push, every young Muslim voice we amplify, there’s a daily struggle.
Running a media outfit is not an easy task. It is expensive, exhausting, and often thankless. We have no one except Allah, and the unwavering belief that our story deserves to be told.
