The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, has expressed joy as some of its members were among the 25 newly inducted radiographers at/in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), Idi-Araba, Lagos.
The 10th induction and oath-taking ceremony for the class of 2022 in the Radiography department was held on Tuesday, July 22 at the College’s Old Great Hall.
Among the graduands are Rabiu Kolapo Abdullateef, Salaudeen Abdulhamid, Qasim Abdullateef, Adewole Jubril, Ishola Khafilat, Asiyat Abdulkareem and Maryam Sangodoyin, who graduated with a first class honours and emerged as the third-best graduating student.
Following the induction, families, friends, and members of the Muslim students body gathered at the LUTH/CMUL Central Mosque, opposite the College to honour the graduating members with a warm reception.
The new graduates couldn’t hide their excitement as they shared their thoughts with Muslim News about the 5-year programme that eventually lasted for eight years due to Covid-19 pandemic that caused severe social and economic disruptions around the world, in early 2020.

Ms. Maryam Sangodoyin, the third best graduating student described her graduation as “surreal and amazing,” attributing her success to Allah, supportive friends, and family.
According to her, “I emerged as the third best graduating student out of 25 students of the radiography class of 2022. All praise is due to Allah. it’s a journey of resilience and I had the privilege of having amazing friends who were really supportive, and I had Allah to guide me, and I am grateful to Allah, my friends and family, for everything.”
Reflecting on her journey, Ms. Sangodoyin, an indigene of Oyo State, revealed that her five-year programme extended to nine years due to a diploma programme, the COVID-19 pandemic, and ASUU strikes.
“I was in year three during COVID-19, and we were delayed for two years. But Allah used the delay to help me grow,” she said. On choosing radiography, she recalled being inspired by a career talk in secondary school. “Radiography was my first choice,” she noted.
An avid Hijab wearer from childhood, the Muslimah emphasized the spiritual grounding MSSN provided. “MSSN reminded me of my purpose – to worship Allah in all that I do,” she said. Looking ahead, she plans to proceed for her internship and further align her career path with Allah’s guidance.

Asiyat AbdulKareem, a former “One-Day Commissioner of Education in Lagos State” and the Muslim student who won the historic hijab court case at the Supreme Court against the Lagos State Government in 2022, expressed her excitement at the completion of the long academic journey.
“Radiography is a unique and lucrative medical course. We don’t have many Muslims, especially ladies in the profession. As a woman, it’s a way to serve other Muslim women, especially in procedures like trans-vaginal ultrasound,” she explained.
Ms AbdulKareem – a symbol of faith and resilience, recounted how the programme, originally five years, extended to eight due to the pandemic and other delays. “We waited for 11 months after our final exams in August 2024 before writing the board exams in May 2025,” she said.

She hopes to intern at Chevron or other reputable institutions and later specialize in radiation therapy. The hijab hero emphasized the importance of support systems. “There is always light at the end of the tunnel. A strong support system cannot be overemphasized,” she said.

Abdul Lateef Rabiu, who gained admission in 2017, expressed gratitude for completing the eight-year journey. “COVID-19, ASUU strikes, and accreditation delays extended our programme by two years,” he noted.
He looks forward to starting his internship and gaining hands-on clinical experience, calling it “the next step into professional life.”

Speaking at the ceremony, Amir (President) of MSSN Lagos, Mal. Kamoldeen Abiona congratulated the newly inducted radiographers, urging them to be exemplary ambassadors of Islam.
Amir Abiona expressed happiness to see more Muslim ladies joining the profession, calling on parents to encourage their children to study radiography.
He said, “All praise is due to Allah that we have females among the newly inducted radiographers. I am really excited even though we can do more, because in the profession today, we have more males who continue to do the work and administer our women.
“But now we are having conscious Muslim ladies graduating as radiographers. With their presence, they’ll be there to handle sensitive scans for Muslim women. This figure across Nigeria is still very low. That is why I am using this medium to call on parents and guardians to sensitize and encourage their children and wards to study radiography.
He also encouraged the new and existing professionals to serve as mentors and promote radiography awareness among secondary school students. “Let them create a chain of future radiographers,” he advised.

Also speaking, the Coordinator, MSSN MAC for CMUL LUTH Muslim Students, Abdulroqib Bello rejoiced with them, saying that “every beginning has an end, every end is a new beginning”.
Bello – a 600-level Medicine and Surgery student, prayed to Allah to grant them the needed strength to overcome their challenges as they transit into a new phase, which he describes as volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.
According to him, “The world needs upright, dedicated and responsible professionals. Be one at all cost; be a good ambassador of Islam wherever you are.
“Your parents have laboured over you for eons, I ask Allah to bless them in abundance and make them reap the fruits of their labour.
“To the upcoming graduands, the ones who still have lecturers to chase and attendances to sign, don’t lose sight of excellence and integrity. Above all, don’t lose sight of Allah.
Once again, I congratulate my brethren. This is the beginning of greatness bi idhniLlah. The world awaits,” he added.
