The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit (MSSN Lagos), joins the rest of the world to commemorate the 2025 International Youth Day with the theme: “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond”.
In a statement signed by the Amir (President) of the Society, Mr. Kamoldeen Abiona, the organisation noted that the focus of this year’s observance underscores the indispensable role of young people in translating global ambitions into community-driven realities—particularly in aligning the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with local needs.
“As an organisation deeply rooted in the grassroots, MSSN Lagos has, for decades, been a rallying point for youth development through its robust organisational hierarchy,” Mr. Abiona stated. “Our presence spans branches in secondary schools, higher institutions, and community-based Central Branches, ensuring that our programmes, activities, and projects impact lives at the closest point of need.”
The statement highlighted the Society’s contributions to all aspects of global development, including educational empowerment through academic competitions and mentoring sessions; moral and civic education through Vacation Courses; digital and leadership training through seminars and workshops; as well as social welfare interventions for underprivileged communities.
The Amir emphasised that grassroots youth engagement is impossible without empowered and functional local governance systems, pointing to the United Nations’ recognition that over 65% of SDG targets are tied to local governance.
“Local Governments are the closest to the people and are best positioned to create inclusive policy environments, allocate resources, and institutionalise youth participation in decision-making,” he said. “Unfortunately, in Nigeria, Local Governments remain handicapped — politically and financially — by constitutional and practical constraints. This must change.”
MSSN Lagos therefore calls on the Federal and State Governments to institute the autonomy of Local Governments — both in law and in practice — to enable them effectively respond to local realities and partner with youth organisations for sustainable impact.
The statement further affirmed the Society’s readiness to partner with government agencies, local authorities, and development stakeholders to achieve the SDGs.
“Our track record in mentorship, innovation, and civic engagement speaks for itself,” Mr. Abiona noted. “We are ready to work with government at all levels to transform youth ideas into impactful community solutions that accelerate the SDGs and prepare the next generation of leaders.”
The MSSN Lagos congratulated Nigerian youths for their resilience and urged them to remain committed to personal growth, community service, and purposeful leadership.
