Grammy-winning superstar Burna Boy confirms conversion to Islam, says faith brought him peace

Afrobeats Grammy-winning superstar, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has disclosed that he has embraced Islam, marking a major spiritual shift in his personal journey.

The revelation came during a Twitch live session with US-based streamer PlaqueBoyMax, where the “Ye” crooner opened up about his religious upbringing, spiritual search, and the eventual conviction that led him to Islam.

Burna Boy, 34, who hails from Port Harcourt, Nigeria, said he was raised in a devout Christian home and followed the faith primarily because it was what his parents practised. However, he explained that as he matured and began exploring life independently, he became more curious about faith and religion.

“I was born into Christianity because that’s what my parents practised,” he said. “However, as I grew older, I began to research life and faith more deeply. That was when I found Islam.”

The award-winning artist clarified that his decision was not out of rebellion, but rather a natural and heartfelt response to his spiritual awakening.

“It was something that came naturally to me. I just felt a connection and peace,” he stated, adding that the faith has given him a sense of calm and purpose that he had long searched for.

He admitted that his journey into Islam is still evolving. “Even now, I’m still learning. The more I read, the more I realise how much I don’t know. But there’s peace in it, and that’s something I’ve been searching for my whole life.”

His announcement has generated a wave of reactions from fans and followers across social media. While some have welcomed the move and praised his courage in embracing a new faith, others questioned how his new identity would reconcile with his often bold and controversial public image and musical themes.
