In a remarkable show of support for Qur’anic excellence, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has awarded a total of N35 million to the winners of the 2025 National Qur’an Memorisation and Tafsir Competition in Nigeria.
The top winners were also granted the rare privilege of performing Hajj free of charge as royal guests under the prestigious Guests of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Program for Hajj and Umrah.
This landmark announcement was made during the competition’s grand finale, held on Sunday, November 23, 2024, at the A-Class Emerald Hall in Wuse II, Abuja.
Muslim News gathered that the competition was jointly organised by the Religious Attaché Office of the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Abuja and the Centre for Islamic Studies, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. It drew outstanding contestants from various states across Nigeria, competing in memorisation and tafsir (interpretation) categories.
Supervised by His Excellency Mr. Saad bin Fahd Al-Marri, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the ceremony was graced by dignitaries including former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami; the Deputy Ambassador of Saudi Arabia; the Acting Religious Attaché, Mr. Yahya Al-Sufyani; and several leading Islamic scholars, academics, and government officials.
In his address, Mr. Saad bin Fahd Al-Marri expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and to His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman (may Allah preserve them) for their continued support in serving the Holy Qur’an and disseminating its teachings across the world.
He also extended thanks to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs for its sustained efforts in supporting Qur’anic programs, and he underlined the Kingdom’s humanitarian and relief role in serving communities in need.
He further commended the Religious Attaché Office for its clear and impactful efforts in Nigeria in support of religious and educational programs.
Al-Marri stressed that this competition forms part of the Kingdom’s ongoing and leading role in serving the Holy Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah.
He highlighted a range of flagship initiatives, including the printing and worldwide distribution of copies of the Noble Qur’an, as well as the organization of local, regional, and international competitions in memorization, recitation, tajwīd, and interpretation.
The ceremony concluded with the honoring of the winners who achieved the top positions, amid wide praise for the high standard of organization and the prominent role of the Kingdom in supporting Qur’anic and educational programs in Nigeria.
The competition reaffirmed the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to promoting Qur’anic knowledge and nurturing religious scholarship across the Muslim world.
