Indian Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has come under fire after forcibly pulling down the niqab (face veil) of a Muslim woman doctor, Dr. Nusrat Parveen, during a public appointment ceremony in Patna, the capital of Bihar state in eastern India.
The incident occurred as the CM handed out appointment letters to over 1,200 newly recruited AYUSH doctors.
In a video that has since gone viral, Kumar is seen questioning the doctor’s headscarf before removing it himself on stage, leaving her visibly uncomfortable, while some in the audience laughed.
The act has been widely condemned as a violation of religious freedom and personal dignity, with critics calling it a clear display of Islamophobia.
Many social media users and civil rights groups have expressed outrage, accusing the Chief Minister of disrespecting Islamic values and humiliating a professional in public. As of now, no official apology has been issued by Nitish Kumar or his office.
