* Calls for patience, emotional intelligence as keys to sustaining Muslim homes
The National President of The Companion, an association of Muslim men in business and the professions, Imam Nojeem Jimoh, has called on couples to embrace understanding, patience and emotional intelligence as essential tools for sustaining successful marriages.
Imam Jimoh made the call while delivering a marital lecture at the ongoing Guild of Muslim Professionals (GMP) Convention holding at AM2PM Hotel, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Muslim News gathered that the convention, themed “Resilient Professionals, Resilient Nation,” commenced on Thursday, December 25, and will conclude tomorrow, Sunday, December 28.
The lecture, which focused on managing differences in marriage, attracted Muslim professionals, scholars and married couples from different parts of the country.
Speaking on the realities of married life, the Imam of the Lighthouse Mosque, Lekki Central Mosque, outlined what he described as “15 Realities of Marital Life,” stressing that marriage is a dynamic institution that requires continuous effort, humility and self-awareness from both partners.
He noted that growing up in a happy home does not automatically translate into a happy marriage, adding that even the most loving couples can experience emotional distance at some point in their union.
According to him, roles within marriage differ significantly from family roles, stressing that being a good brother or sister does not necessarily equate to being a good husband or wife.
Imam Jimoh further explained that emotions in marriage can be complex, pointing out that it is possible to love and dislike a partner at the same time, especially during challenging periods.
He reminded Muslim professionals that the excitement of new relationships often fades with time, and that even couples in seemingly happy marriages may occasionally question their choices.
The respected Muslim scholar also warned that secrets hidden before or during marriage often surface eventually, emphasizing that many marital struggles are shared experiences, particularly among new couples.
He revealed that betrayal of trust and public embarrassment are among the most difficult challenges to overcome in marriage.
Imam Jimoh highlighted the importance of romance, stating that marriage never outgrows the need for affection and intentional bonding.
He added that spouses often resist uncomfortable truths and may argue when confronted, even though such truths are necessary for personal and marital growth.
According to him, spouses often know each other’s weaknesses better than parents do, stressing that pain in marriage is rarely one-sided.
The Amir of The Companion also acknowledged the reality of midlife crises, noting that many individuals live in denial of its impact on their marriages and relationships.
Concluding his lecture, Imam Jimoh challenged couples to engage in sincere self-reflection, stressing that many people struggle to admit their own shortcomings in marriage.
The GMP Convention will wrap up tomorrow, Sunday, after four days of impactful lectures, networking, cultural engagement, and excursion aimed at promoting ethical leadership, professional excellence and strong family values within the Muslim community.
