The capture, or what some have called abduction, of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US forces has reignited global debate over the credibility and consistency of international justice. Though Washington claims the move is tied to longstanding drug trafficking charges, many observers point to deeper motives, namely Venezuela’s vast oil wealth and Maduro’s anti-West stance.
It is important to recall that in 2020, Maduro was indicted by the U.S. Southern District Court of New York on allegations of drug trafficking. By 2025, Washington had doubled the reward for information leading to his arrest, raising it to $50 million.
Beyond the official charges, however, analysts argue that the action reflects deeper political and economic motivations. Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, and the United States has long sought influence over its energy sector.
Maduro’s resistance to U.S. pressure, alongside his strategic alignment with Russia, China and Iran, placed him squarely at odds with Washington, turning Venezuela into a theatre of geopolitical contestation.
Another fundamental question therefore arises: What legal or moral authority does the United States have to arrest the sitting president of a sovereign nation? Under international law, heads of state enjoy immunity from arrest by foreign powers, except through clearly defined multilateral mechanisms such as UN-backed tribunals or the International Criminal Court (ICC), none of which authorised this action.
Critics warn that unilateral arrests carried out through military force undermine the principles of state sovereignty, non-intervention and the rule-based international order, replacing law with power.
The development also revives a long-standing accusation of double standards in global justice. Observers ask whether Maduro’s alleged crimes outweigh those attributed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose leadership has coincided with the killing of more than 70,000 Palestinians during the two-year genocidal war on #Gaza. Despite the ICC issuing warrants related to war crimes, Netanyahu remains shielded from arrest.
That protection, critics argue, is sustained by continued U.S. political cover and unwavering support for Israel, including the supply of weapons, military hardware and billions of dollars in financial assistance, even as international outrage grows over civilian casualties and humanitarian devastation.
Rights groups say such backing not only enables violations of international humanitarian law but also erodes Washington’s credibility as a defender of human rights and accountability.
In the view of many analysts, the Maduro arrest underscores a troubling reality: leaders aligned with U.S. interests often enjoy immunity, regardless of alleged abuses, while those who resist American influence are swiftly criminalised and targeted, sometimes under the banner of justice, other times under the guise of national security.
