Experts and thought leaders have urged young Muslims not to see failure as the end of the road but as a phase that can lead to growth, renewal and stronger faith, stressing that setbacks often carry lessons necessary for personal and spiritual development.
The message formed the core of discussions at the launch of Becoming Again, a new book by Abdulbasit Abdusalam, which explores themes of failure, faith, identity and rebuilding after life’s disappointments.
Delivering the keynote address at the virtual unveiling held on Friday, January 2, Mr. Sam Oshinuga, an investment professional at the International Finance Corporation, emphasised the importance of acknowledging emotions after failure rather than suppressing them.
He noted that healing and progress begin when individuals confront their pain honestly instead of denying it.
Mr. Oshinuga described Becoming Again as a timely and necessary intervention for young people struggling to make sense of failure in a society that often rewards perfection.
According to him, the book provides a realistic framework for emotional and personal rebuilding at a time when many young adults feel lost or left behind.
In his goodwill message, Dr Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, Director-General of the Office of Education Quality at the Lagos State Ministry of Education, reflected on the author’s personal journey, describing him as resilient and versatile. He said Abdusalam’s life story demonstrates that setbacks do not define a person’s future.
“Abdulbasit is someone who has seen failure, lived through it, and yet found the courage to ignite a spark within himself to rise again,” Dr. Ogunmuyiwa said.
He added that failure, when properly understood, can serve as a turning point rather than a dead end, noting that many young people are not lacking ability but are struggling with self-belief after experiencing setbacks.
He commended the book for addressing this reality with honesty and depth.
Also speaking, Professor Tajudeen Yusuf, a professor of Risk Management and Insurance at the University of Lagos, reminded participants that failure is never final for a believer, stressing that Allah’s plan remains superior to human expectations, no matter how bleak circumstances may appear.
Prof Yusuf, who is also the President of the Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals (IIFP), Nigeria, noted that trials often come with lessons that only reveal themselves through patience and trust in divine wisdom.
Similarly, Engineer Nasir Giwa, the founder of Nasir Giwa Mentorship (NGM) platform, encouraged attendees to purchase copies of the book for themselves and their loved ones, describing it as a reflection of the real challenges facing young people today.
Engr. Giwa, who is the Coordinator of BUA Refinery, said the book speaks openly to emotional and psychological struggles that many experience but rarely discuss.
Earlier, the author explained that ‘Becoming Again‘ was written for individuals who have failed and do not know how to face themselves afterward. He stressed that the book is not about instant success but about rebuilding identity, self-esteem and faith after falling.
The event concluded with a shared understanding that failure is not a verdict but a phase, and that renewal remains possible for anyone willing to begin again with sincerity, patience and faith.
