South African activist Dr Hendricks receives Global Advocate for Peace and Justice award in Nigeria

Renowned South African human rights activist and medical doctor, Dr Fatima Hendricks, has received the prestigious “Global Advocate for Peace and Justice of the Year 2024/2025” award plaque and certificate from the organisers, Muslim News Nigeria.

The symbolic presentation was done on Wednesday, December 24, by the newspaper’s publisher, Rasheed Abubakar, who also serves as the convener of the annual Muslim News Awards of Excellence (MNAwards2024/2025).

Dr Hendricks was among the 21 distinguished personalities recognised in the Global and Nigerian Muslim Personalities of the Year 2024/2025 list, recently announced in a special edition of the newspaper dedicated to celebrating outstanding Muslim achievers.

The South African activist, who is widely known for her courageous humanitarian work and her role in the Global Sumud Flotilla, was honoured for her fearless advocacy, unwavering support for oppressed communities, and strong commitment to justice, even in the face of personal risk.

She was in Nigeria during the December Islamic camping period, when thousands of Muslim youths engaged in intensive spiritual and leadership training across the country.

As part of her engagements, she met with the Muslim News Nigeria team to formally receive her award plaque, certificate, and complimentary copies of the newspaper’s special edition featuring her and other awardees.

In a touching moment, Dr Hendricks presented her keffiyeh scarf to Alhaji Abubakar as a symbol of continued solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. Watch HERE

While accepting the award, Dr Hendricks expressed gratitude to the newspaper and Nigerians for their unyielding support for Palestine.

According to her, “Thank you so much to Muslim News Nigeria and the wonderful people of Nigeria. You stand steadfast with the Palestinian people and show unwavering solidarity in the face of a genocide that has continued for several decades. I dedicate this award to them.”

She added, “This is not bravery. It is an act of fard kifayah, a collective obligation. We are responsible for standing up and fighting for justice.”

Recognising the many journalists killed in Gaza, Dr Hendricks commended Muslim News Nigeria for continuing to uphold truth and justice through fearless reporting.

“I salute Muslim News Nigeria for continuing to speak the truth against all odds and for upholding justice in the pursuit of peace. May Allah bless you all.”
