* Calls for deeper understanding of Islam

The Mudir of Ibadullah Islamic Schools, Amukoko, Lagos State, Sheikh Sulaiman Adeyemi Yusuf Adewuyi, has been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Arabic Grammar by Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Kwara State, despite his numerous academic, religious, and social commitments.

His doctoral dissertation, titled “Semantic Antithesis in the Variations of Qur’anic Recitations in Surah Al-Imran: An Applied Semantic Study,” explored the linguistic and semantic dimensions of Qur’anic recitations, with particular emphasis on meaning, contrast, and interpretation.

Speaking after the award, an elated Sheikh Adewuyi, who is also a lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages (Arabic Unit), Lagos State University of Education, described rigorous scholarship as the foundation of authentic religious understanding.

According to him, proper knowledge of Islam is essential for building a just society and fostering peaceful coexistence.

“This true understanding of our faith, Islam, is the foundation for building a just nation and promoting peaceful coexistence—a legacy we must faithfully transmit to our students and communities,” he said.

The Islamic scholar and teacher noted that despite the numerous challenges confronting Nigeria, commitment to knowledge remains the most potent weapon against ignorance, division, and extremism.

“The challenge and opportunity for every educated Nigerian, especially at this time, is to become a semanticist of our national life—to seek the shared, divine meanings of peace, justice, and progress that bind us together, across different interpretations and faiths,” he stated.

“I dedicate this achievement to every Nigerian student who believes that education and faith can coexist to build a more enlightened society.”

Sheikh Adewuyi reiterated the need for a proper understanding of Islam as a pathway to addressing global crises and promoting peaceful coexistence.

He explained that Islam is fundamentally a religion of peace and urged Muslims to reflect this reality through their conduct by emulating the teachings and lifestyle of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“Peaceful coexistence is a core message of Islam. Terrorism is not a product of true Islamic scholarship but of ignorance and misinterpretation,” he said.

“Acts of terror are not carried out by well-informed Muslims, but by people who lack proper understanding of the religion and falsely believe they are acting in the cause of Allah. Islam does not support the taking of lives, but rather their protection.”

Adewuyi also identified racism and disunity as major challenges confronting Nigeria, calling for unity and describing the country as a “United States of Nigeria,” where citizens of diverse backgrounds should live together in harmony.

He further advised students to remain focused and committed to their studies, urging them to always place God first and embrace patience and perseverance in the face of life’s challenges.
