Tunji Disu has been appointed the 23rd acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), describing the elevation as “humbling and deeply emotional” at a time he least expected.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced Disu’s appointment on Tuesday following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing “pressing family issues.”
The formal decoration ceremony took place at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday.
Speaking shortly after assuming office at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters, Disu expressed gratitude to the President for finding him worthy of the top police position.
“The appointment means a lot to me because of my love for the profession and for the country. I was not expecting it, and I thank the President for finding me worthy,” he said.
Disu described the President’s remarks about his career as touching and encouraging, noting that the acknowledgment of his past assignments and achievements reflects close attention to officers across the country and challenges him to deliver even more.
He pledged to prioritise peace, stability, and national cohesion, stressing that citizens remain the “real bosses” of the police.
The acting IGP said one of his immediate priorities will be to remind officers that effective policing cannot succeed without public cooperation.
Disu also promised to focus on the welfare of personnel, noting that motivated officers are better positioned to deliver results.
On discipline and accountability, he declared, “The era of impunity is over,” pledging strict adherence to human rights standards and a zero-tolerance stance on corruption within the force.
Acknowledging the country’s ongoing security challenges, including banditry and insurgency, Disu commended officers for their dedication and promised to boost morale, improve coordination, and strengthen operational effectiveness.
Tinubu urges IGP to restore peace and strengthen security
At the State House, President Tinubu charged Disu to rebuild public confidence in the police and strengthen security nationwide.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” Tinubu said.
The President described Disu’s appointment as coming at a critical time and urged him to lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level, and ensure the protection of lives and property.

Tinubu also called on Disu to advance the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and expressed confidence in the acting IGP’s discipline, operational experience, and leadership capacity.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” he said, reaffirming that Nigeria will prevail under committed leadership.
