Amb. Poroy reflects on Türkiye’s legacy as Embassy celebrates 102nd Republic Day in Abuja

* Reaffirms Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria

The Turkish Embassy in Abuja sparkled with pride and patriotism on Wednesday night as it hosted a remarkable reception to commemorate the 102nd anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye.

The event brought together members of the Turkish community in Nigeria, top Nigerian dignitaries, diplomats, and friends of Türkiye for an unforgettable evening of unity, reflection, and cultural exchange.

Muslim News gathered that no fewer than 500 guests attended the colourful ceremony. Among them were H.E. Jumoke Oduwole, Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment; H.E. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment; H.E. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Honourable Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction; and H.E. Bello Muhammad Goronyo, Honourable Minister of State for Works.

Also in attendance were delegates from Muslim News Nigeria, who travelled from Lagos and Ilorin, Kwara State, led by the Publisher, Alhaji Rasheed Abubakar.

The ceremony began with the rendition of the national anthems of Türkiye and Nigeria, performed in the beautifully decorated courtyard of the embassy, illuminated with lights and adorned with the flags of both nations.

Türkiye’s Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Mehmet Poroy, delivered the official message of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, congratulating all 86 million citizens of Türkiye, the Turkish Cypriot people, and Turkish nationals around the world.

He also expressed appreciation to Türkiye’s allies and friends globally, stating: “On behalf of myself and my nation, I extend my gratitude to all our friends who have nurtured our shared civilization, co-inherited our rich cultural heritage, and joined in our celebrations.”

Erdogan in a speech read by Turkiye Ambassador paid tribute to the founder of the Republic, Ghazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and all heroes who made Türkiye their homeland through centuries of struggle.

He also reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with Nigeria.

“Today, I once again commemorate with gratitude all members of our veteran Parliament, who led and steered the National Struggle paving the way for the Republic, especially Ghazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of our Republic.

“I remember the heroes who, for centuries, made these lands our homeland with their blood and lives, from the first raids in Ahlat and Malazgirt to the Gallipoli Epic, from the War of Independence to the 15 July Resistance, and I wish them Allah’s mercy,” he noted

In the continuation of President Erdogan’s speech, Türkiye’s Amb. to Nigeria delved into the rich historical and cultural symbolism that defines the Turkish Republic, drawing attention to the emblematic elements of Türkiye’s presidential seal.

According to him, “The sun and the 16 stars surrounding it on our presidential seal represent our state tradition stretching back thousands of years.

“Each of these states, founded on the ideal of “eternity,” is a legend of honour and glory for our national identity a symbol of the power and compassion of our noble nation, which guides the world.

“The Republic of Türkiye,” he added, “is the final bastion of our self-sacrificing nation; a people who clung to their freedom and independence despite unimaginable hardships. It is the final link in our chain of states.”

President Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s ambitious vision for the Century of Türkiye; a comprehensive development agenda shaping the nation’s future.

“We are taking groundbreaking strides across all sectors, from the defence industry to the economy, education to agriculture, and tourism to foreign policy,” he declared.

Touching on the February 2023 earthquake disaster, he affirmed Türkiye’s swift response: “Insha’Allah, by the end of the year, we will have delivered keys to 453,000 homes, as promised.”

He concluded by expressing hope for a terror-free, prosperous Türkiye where all 86 million citizens can thrive in harmony.

President Erdoğan also addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and other conflict zones, stressing Türkiye’s active role in pursuing peace and justice through diplomacy, aid, and mediation efforts.

“As a defender of truth and justice, Türkiye is working tirelessly for a more just world,” the message read.

Guided by a comprehensive foreign policy approach inspired by the double-headed Seljuk Eagle, Amb. Poroy concluded with optimism: “Together, we will build a Türkiye that is strong, respected, and prosperous. May Allah grant us success in our efforts. Happy 102nd Republic Day to all!”

The evening ended with networking opportunities, Turkish cuisine, and heartfelt camaraderie to further cementing the growing diplomatic and cultural ties between Türkiye and Nigeria.
