* Abubakar, Garba commend appointees’ media experience and professionalism
Muslim News Nigeria and the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria, MMPN, Lagos State Chapter, have congratulated Dr Umar Jibrilu Gwandu and Hajia Sekinah Lawal on their appointments as Public Relations Officer and Deputy Public Relations Officer respectively of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA.
The congratulatory statements were signed separately on Saturday, October 3, 2026, following the appointments announced as part of the expanded leadership structure of the NSCIA after its General Assembly in Abuja on Thursday, October 1.
Muslim News publisher congratulates Gwandu
Publisher of Muslim News Nigeria, Rasheed Abubakar, congratulated his friend, brother in faith and one of the newspaper’s editorial advisers, Dr Gwandu, on his appointment as the Public Relations Officer of the NSCIA.
Abubakar described Gwandu as a media practitioner, communication expert and academic whose professional experience would be valuable in his new responsibility within the apex Islamic council.
The Publisher said Gwandu had supported Muslim News Nigeria in different capacities over the years, particularly through editorial guidance, professional advice and contributions to discussions on media, communication and issues affecting Muslims.
He said Gwandu’s experience in journalism, strategic communication, public relations and public service had prepared him for the responsibility of managing the Council’s public communication.
“Dr Umar Jibrilu Gwandu is not only my friend but also one of the respected editorial advisers of Muslim News Nigeria. He has supported the newspaper in different capacities and has consistently demonstrated professionalism, intellectual depth and commitment to responsible communication,” Abubakar said.
The publisher said Gwandu’s appointment would provide an opportunity to further strengthen communication between the NSCIA, the Muslim community, the media and the wider Nigerian public.
Gwandu’s media and public service experience
Gwandu is a Nigerian media practitioner, communication expert and academic with professional experience spanning journalism, academia, public relations and public service.
He served as Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations to former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.
In that capacity, he was involved in the communication activities of the Federal Ministry of Justice and handled media engagements on issues relating to the ministry and the Federal Government.
Gwandu also has international public relations experience, including his appointment at the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC.
His professional background also includes academic engagement in mass communication and communication studies.
Abubakar said Gwandu’s combination of media, academic and public service experience would be relevant to the communication demands of the NSCIA.
MMPN Lagos congratulates Sekinah Lawal
Muslim News Nigeria also joined the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria, MMPN, Lagos State Chapter, to congratulate the association’s State Treasurer, Hajia Sekinah Lawal, on her appointment as Deputy Public Relations Officer of the NSCIA.
Chairman of MMPN Lagos State Chapter, Dr Kabir Alabi Garba, described Lawal’s appointment as recognition of her professionalism, dedication and contributions to journalism and public communication.
The association expressed confidence that Lawal would bring her experience, commitment to ethical journalism and passion for effective communication to bear on her new responsibility.
“Hajia Sekinah Lawal, the MMPN Lagos State Treasurer and a former Chairperson of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, has demonstrated leadership and commitment to the advancement of journalism and the development of women in the media profession,” Garba said.
He added that her experience in media practice and professional leadership would contribute meaningfully to the discharge of her responsibilities within the NSCIA.
‘Opportunity to strengthen public engagement’
MMPN Lagos said Lawal’s appointment would provide an opportunity to strengthen public engagement and promote better understanding of the Council’s activities, programmes and positions on issues affecting the Muslim Ummah.
The association noted that effective public relations remained important to promoting unity, mutual understanding and constructive engagement between the NSCIA, the Muslim community and the wider Nigerian society.
It expressed optimism that Lawal would contribute to improving the visibility of the Council’s initiatives and strengthening its communication with the media and other stakeholders.
MMPN Lagos urged her to sustain the values of professionalism, integrity, inclusiveness and responsible communication in the discharge of her duties.
Both Muslim News Nigeria and MMPN Lagos State Chapter prayed that Almighty Allah would grant Gwandu and Lawal wisdom, strength and guidance in their respective assignments, and enable them to contribute meaningfully to the growth of the NSCIA and the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.
