Why rape cases are on the rise in Nigeria, by Igho Hakeem Ohwojeheri

Few weeks ago, there was a case involving a certain guy who was being accused of sexual harassment and rape by some ladies on twitter. The guy was trending because of the allegations and one of his accusers posted screen shots of her discussion with him to prove that the guy actually raped her.

In the chat, she accused the guy of raping her and the guy sort of apologised. The troubling part of the conversation was that the girl wanted to come visit again, but wanted the guy to promise not to make a move at her. She wanted to spend the night watching movies with the guy that had previously raped her and she felt comfortable sharing the chat with the public.

There is a reason why our society is full with monsters who rape women, defile children and have sex with their siblings. And there are reasons why we have so many women with very low self-worth.

The over sexualization of our society is the reason why cases of defilement, rape and incest are on the increase. Young people are exposed to nudity and pornography on a massive scale. They are bombarded with sexually suggestive music and dance steps and sex is at every turn. The movies you watch, the music you listen and dance to, the proliferation and easy access to pornographic materials is that reason for the increase in sexual and some other crimes in our society.

How is it okay that the most popular songs and dance steps are the ones that objectify women? How is it okay that pornographic materials are sold in open places and their websites are accessible in the country? How about the movies we watch? The fact they put age restrictions in movies tells you that they have acknowledged the fact that the movies are harmful.

It was never always like this. Our grandfathers married as virgins and they did not rape our grandmothers. They did not defile kids or have sex with their children. At a point things started changing. The generation that came after became fornicators and adulterers and the one that came after, our generation, became not just fornicators and adulterers, they became homosexuals, rapists and incestophiles.

A glimpse of what is to come is the story of a seventeen year-old in Benin who killed his mother and thereafter had sex with her dead body.

Hashtag cannot fix the problem of rape, defilement and incest. We have to first identify the causes of the problem and then attempt to fix it.
