FRIDAY SERMON: The manifestation of nudity and its prohibitions

All praises belong to Allah, the Lord of the Universe, The One Who mandated chastity and modesty and purity, the One Who said in His Perfect Book while commanding His Messenger: “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful” [Al Ahzaab:59]. I seek Blessings and Peace on the best of His creations and on members of his household, his companions and all those that follow his Sunnah and are guided by his guidance till the Day of Judgement.

Thereafter, brothers and sisters in faith! One of the favours of Allah that He has bestowed on his slaves is the Favour of Islaam and Guidance for those that follow the Shariah path of the best human, given what it includes of good and happiness in this life and Success and victory and salvation on the Day of Resurrection for those that adhere to the guidance and tread the straight path, as it puts barriers/shields that prevents us from falling into His prohibition and into His Punishment in this life and the hereafter.

Allah says:

“O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.” [Al ‘Aaraaf:27].

Servants of Allah! It has become widespread among us, vices that destroy the honour of humanity and that is a judgement on the core of his nobility from the beginning of his creation, and has robbed him of his modesty which is an aspect of Eeman, despite the fact that whoever is bereft of modesty is bereft of al good. This is in accordance to what the Messenger of Allah [Peace and Blessings be upon him] said:

“Modesty is all good”, “If you are not bashful, then you can do whatever you want”. The women now follow blindly those that do have the guidance of religion with them, and who do not bind themselves by the commands of Allah Ta’alah, leading to spreading corruption over all the servants of Allah. “Fear the world and fear women: indeed the first trouble the Bani Israail fell into was in women”. Among these problems is the problem of nudity of women and their open adornment. It is for this reason that our sermon today will be about ‘the manifestations of nudity and its prohibition.’

Dear servants of Allah listening to me! We live in time when many tribulations and chaos emerge, with materialism overwhelming its proponents, when religion is weakened, and its greatness is belittled in the minds of most people, and when one tribulations go away, another follows it, every tribulation is like a part of a dark night, tribulations that dwarfs other ones. And one of the biggest tribulations that the devils among jinns and men have occupied people with is the tribulation of women, I accordance with the words of the Messenger of Allah [Peace and Blessings be upon him] about Usaamah ibn Zayd [may Allah be please with him]: “I have not left any fitnah against my Ummah that is more difficult for men than the fitnah of women.” [Bukhaari and Muslim].

Indeed, nudity has become so much in this time, and open adornment is widespread, so much that it has become the aspiration of many women today – who have little shame, whose religion is weak, causing them to transgress against Allah in this terrible forbidden vice – is blind followership without the insight and teachings of Islaam while neglecting the divine, excellent and ultimate commands Allah. And even their custodians share in it. Until they no longer have any value for the sanctity of their own body and their nakedness. They made space for them n their outings in gatherings and meetings, mingling directly with crowds of people with their bodies with no restriction, to the extent that the faasik and the abusive can enjoy them and use them as tools for advertisements, despite the fact that the nakedness of women and looking at her is a poisonous toxin and is from the arrows of the shaytaan.

Brothers in faith! Verily, the woman is a big means of reforming society just as she could be a big toolbox corrupting it. The corruption of a single woman is tantamount to the corruption of a whole big part of society, and its goodness is the goodness of an important part of society. So it incumbent upon guardians and parents to do a good job of training them with the manners and morals of Islam, and to be keen especially on teaching them the Qur’aan and the commands of Allah contained therein, and also imbue in them the love of the Messenger of Allah and members of his household, who are the best examples and models. And also the be keen on keeping them busy with what would give them benefits, and keep them away from what would destroy their morals, and their exposure to devices and company that influence them, by monitoring and protecting them. This is because evil people are everywhere and many, and they do not spare believers. So do not leave space for them to lure Muslim children and the people in general.

It is not unknown to you my honourable listeners (readers), the tragedy that has become widespread in many of our communities from nudity and indecent adornment of women, and their failure to cover themselves from being exposed to men and revealing much of the adornments that Allah had prohibited to reveal. There’s no doubt that this is a big condemnable act and a manifest sin. This is one of the big causes of the punishment of Allah and the coming down of Allah’s wrath, as a result of what follows nudity and indecent adornment from unlawful sexual intercourse, crimes and general corruption in the land.

So fear Allah and hold the hand of the fools (from harming themselves and others). Prevent women from what Allah has made forbidden upon them, and make them adhere to covering and veiling themselves. Fear the wrath of Allah Almighty and the severity of His punishment. It has been narrated authentically from the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: “Verily, when people see something condemnable and they do not change it, it is possible that Allah would generalize them with His punishment” (Tirimidhi and Abuu Daawud). And Allah Ta’alah says: “Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of Daawud and of ‘Isa, the son of Maryam. That was because they disobeyed and habitually] transgressed. They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did. How wretched was that which they were doing.” (Al-Maaidah: 78-79). And it is related in the Musnad and others from Ibn Mas’ud that the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) recited this verse and then said: “And by Him (Allah) whom my soul is in his hand:“ You will enjoin good and forbid evil, and hold the wrongdoer’s (fools) hands, and you will set him right on the right path of Truth, or Allah would strike your heart against one another and then curse you the way He cursed them.” If the Shari’ah texts concerning nudity and display of adornment point to anything, it is that everything that has afflicted the world of man today of disasters and calamities are the comebacks from what their hands and actions have brought forth: “And whatever strikes you of disaster – it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.” (Shuurah: 30)

Nudity is disobedience to Allah and his Messenger. And whoever disobey Allah and His messenger does not harm anyone but himself. And nothing can ever harm Allah. And as he (Peace and Blessings be upon him) said in one hadith: “Everyone of my Ummah will enter Al-Jannah except whoever refuses. So they said, ‘Oh Messenger of Allah, who will refuse?’ He said, ‘Whoever obeys me will enter Al-Jannah and whoever disobeys me has indeed refused.'” (Bukhaariy).

Moreover, nudity is one of the biggest destructive sins. Imaam Ahmad has narrated with a sound chain of transmission that Umaymah bint Ruqayqah came to the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings be upon him) to take and pledge her allegiance to Islaam. So he (Peace and Blessings be upon him) said:“I pledge allegiance to you on the condition that you do not associate anything with Allah, and you do not steal, you would not commit adultery, you would not kill your child, and that you would not come forth with a slander you have invented between your hands and legs, you do not mourn (shouting), and you do not expose your body like in the days pre-Islamic ignorance.” Ponder on how the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) associated nudity of days of ignorance with the biggest of the big destructive sins like shirk, zinaa and others.

One of the evils of indecent exposure is that it brings the wrath of Allah and being separated from His Mercy and Favours. And it is narrated from Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr Ibn Al-‘Aas (may Allah be pleased with both) that he said: the Messenger of Allah said: “There will be in my later Ummah women who are clothed but are naked, having on their heads are like the swaying humps of bacterial camels. Curse them because they are cursed.” (Authentic).

Among the evils of indecent exposure and nudity is that it is one of the descriptions and characteristics of the inmates of the Fire. It is related by Abu Hurrairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) said: “There are two categories of people who will enter the Hell-fire, whom I have not (as yet) seen: People having whips similar to ox-tails with which they will beat people, and (secondly) women who will be dressed yet appear to be naked. They will seduce men and be inclined towards them. Their heads will be like the swaying humps of bacterial camels. They will neither enter paradise, nor smell its fragrance.” (Muslim).

It is a disgrace and an abomination. It has been related from the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) that he said: “Three categories of people would not be asked after: one who separates himself from the Jama’ah disobeying his Imaam and he died being disobedient; a slave girl or slave-boy who stays away from his/her master and died; and a woman whose husband is away from her and she is satisfied with the enjoyment of the world and she exposes herself after him, do not ask about them”. (Bukhaariy). In this hadith, the treacherous woman feels the need for her husband and she then exposes herself to other men, while she does not beautify and adorn herself for her husband. What can we say about today’s women who have no need like that, rather they commit worse types of nudity and immorality for all yo see and hear. It is infact with the approval and pleasure of their husbands and parents. To Allah we take our complaints.

May Allah bless me and you in the Glorious Qur’an, and benefit me and you with the verses and the wise remembrance in it. I have said all these, and I seek the Forgiveness of Allah, the Almighty and the Majestic for myself and you. I seek His Forgiveness for verily, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

THE SECOND SERMON

All praises are due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. The Lord of the foremost and the latter. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and companions. Allah, the Exalted said: ” And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance. And establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet’s] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.” (Al-ahzaab: 33)

Allah also says: ” O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (Al-ahzaab: 59)
Based on these noble verses, the scholars have specified some conditions for the dressing of the Muslim women that knows her religion and is passionate about her modesty and bashfulness:

Firstly: It should cover all the body apart from whatever has been exempted.

Secondly: It should be thick and not light nor transparent, because the purpose of the hijab is to conceal, and if it is not a cover, it is not called a veil, because it does not prevent vision and it does not block the view

Thirdly: it should not be an adornment in and of itself or of a showy, attractive color that draws attention. Allah says: and not to show off their adornment (al-Noor 24:31)

Fourthly: It should be loose, not tight, nor reveal underneath body part, and it should not give shape of the body, nor reveal the tempting body parts.

Fifthly: It should not be perfumed because that stirs excitement in men as mentioned in the musnad. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Any woman who has scented herself with bakhoor (incense), let her not attend Ishaa prayers with us”

Sixthly: It should not resemble the clothing of men, according to the hadith of Abu Hurairah in the Musnad of Ahmad and others. Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed the man who wears womens clothes, and the woman who wears mens clothes.

Seventhly: It should not resemble the dress of kaafir women.

With this, a person will have achieved the goal of his responsibility as a father who seeks Allah and he is asked about what has been entrusted upon him the Day of Resurrection, so he will be worthy of the reward. The prophet, peace and blessings be upon him said, “He who is involved (in the responsibility) of (bringing up) daughters, and he is benevolent towards them, they would become protection for him against Hell-fire.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Dua: Oh Allah, endow us and our women with chastity and modesty, O Allah, save our women from wanton display of ornament and nakedness, and callers to disbelief, O Allah, the strong, the Mighty. Oh Allah, protect the Muslim women, endow them with modesty, and bashfulness. Oh Allah, whoever that wishes evil plot for our women, our land, turn their plot against them, Oh the All-hearing of prayers. Oh Allah show us the truth as the truth, and grant us the will to follow, and show the falsehood and falsehood, and grant us the ability to move away from it. And shower peace and blessings upon our prophet, Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
