Hijab is Allah’s commandment, not Arab culture  — Islamic scholar

An Ibadan, Oyo-based Islamic scholar, Ustadh Rasheed Hasheem has called on Nigerians to allow the use of hijab in public and private institutions, saying the Islamic dress code is not an obstacle to performance of duties.

Ustadh Hasheem made the appeal during a radio programme on Lagelu FM 96.7, Ibadan, earlier in the week.

The show was sponsored by a female Islamic organisation, Al-Akhwaatul Muslimaat, Oyo State Chapter, as part of its line up of activities marking the 9th edition of World Hijab Day.

The Proprietor of Muflihun High School, Ibadan, emphasised that the hijab is Allah’s commandment well entrenched in many verses of the Glorious Qur’an, including Q24: 31, Q33:59 among other numerous proofs from the hadith (Prophetic tradition).

During the 15 minutes radio programme monitored by Muslim News, the eloquent Islamic teacher revealed that the hijab is an act of worship that is highly rewarding and not Arab culture, as it depicts modesty and not shamelessness.

He explained that the hijab is used to cover women’s bosom, ornaments and beauty and not their brains, citing a couple of hijab-wearing Muslim ladies, the likes of: Yusuf Faidat Ololade (UNILORIN), Sanni Mutmainah (OAU), Dr Kafilat Oyaremi (UI) and Owolabi Habeebah (UI) who excelled academically in their various departments and were awarded by the authorities of their respective universities.

He therefore cautioned people from the persecution, molestation, harassment and discrimination against Muslim women as it amounts to barbarism.

He concluded the lecture by urging the public to allow the use of hijab in schools, hospitals, offices and all other public places, as the hijab is never an obstacle to performance of duties.
