MUSWEN writes book on ‘Islam in Yorubaland’, picks April 28 for unveiling

The Muslim Ummah of South-West Nigeria (MUSWEN) has concluded arrangements to launch a new book, which chronicles the history of ‘Islam in Yorubaland’, the cultural region of the Yoruba people in West Africa.

The details of the book including its unveling was announced by the MUSWEN Media Consultant, Alhaji Femi Abbas, in his weekly Wednesday column, titled, ‘Alert! Alert! Alert’!

For more than a month, Alhaji Abbas, a veteran Nigerian journalist, who won the 2020 Nigerian Muslim Media Person of the Year, has been consistently creating awareness for the new book, titled, Islam in Yorubaland, on social media, especially on his WhatsApp platform.

Muslim News findings revealed that the public presentation of the 25-chapter book compiled by notable Nigerian Muslim scholars in diverse disciplines will be held virtually on Sunday, April 28, 2021.

The scholars, we reliably gathered are in disciplines such as History, Arabic, Islamic Studies, Sociology, Economics, Law and Education among others, and they all contributed to the success of the book which is poised to correct misconceptions and distortions by non-Muslim historians in relation to Islam in Yorubaland.

According to Alhaji Abbas, the book, Islam in Yorubaland was written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of MUSWEN as an umbrella body for all Muslims in South-Western Nigeria as represented by the State Muslim Councils/Communities and Muslim Organisations and Institutions domiciled in the six states of the region.

“It’s also a product of ‘The International Conference on Islam in ‘Yorubaland’ held on 6th October, 2018 (Sabt 26th Muharram 1440 AH).

Other information about the book

PREFACE

Alhaji Abbas said, “The preface of any book, for a good reader, is the concise form of that book literarily and semantically. The book titled ‘ISLAM IN YORUBALAND’ is not an exception in this case. As promised, in this column last week Wednesday, an excerpt from the preface of this book is being presented here today. The preface was written by Professor M. O. Opeloye, formally of Obafemi Awolowo University, who is also the coordinator of its writing.

Here goes the excerpt: “This book has been conceived in the womb of time at that important juncture where the past with reference to Yoruba land finds relevance in the present and where the latter gestures towards the future. This edited volume has been written by specialists in the twin disciplines of Arabic and Islamic Studies who are affiliated to Yorubaland by chance (birth) and by choice.

In other words, this edited book carefully titled ‘ISLAM IN YORUBALAND’: History, Education and Culture’ has been written by those who have the requisite intellectual capacity in the extremely engaging field and those whose knowledge and experience of the bucolic landscape of the Yorubas is indubitable. This is a volume put together to plot the graph and the trajectories of the Islamic factor and impacts in social-cultural and political streams and trends in Yorubaland, and to chronicle what it means to be a Muslim in South-West Nigeria.

The idea to publish an edited volume on the important but largely uncelebrated role of Islam and Muslims in Yoruba’s public sphere was initially meant to commemorate the tenth year anniversary of the establishment of the Yorba Muslim Ummah of the South-West of Nigeria (MUSWEN). The book is meant, at the outset, to celebrate the discovery of Yoruba Muslims’ sense of unity and communality within the larger modernizing Yoruba nation where individuality and secularity have become the zeitgeist….”

PRICE

The price of the hard cover of the book is N5000 while that of the soft cover is N3500.

NOTE

The places where the book can be available for sale and purchase will be announced on the day of public presentation. God bless you all.
