In many verses of the Noble Qur’an, Allah would follow belief with the good deeds. In some other verses, He (SWT) told us the importance of establishing the pillars of Islam, which are meant to purify and tame us towards moral perfection.
Chapter (31), sūrat Luq’mān verse 8:
“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds – for them are Gardens of Bliss.”
“But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness – to them shall We give a Home in Heaven,- lofty mansions beneath which flow rivers,- to dwell therein for aye;- an excellent reward for those who do (good)!” (Al-Ankaboot, Chapter 29, Verse 58)
“For those who believe and do righteous deeds are Gardens as hospitable homes, for their (good) deeds.” (As-Sajda, Chapter 32, Verse 16)
“Allah has promised those among them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness and a great Reward.” (Al-Fath, Chapter 48, Verse 29)
“Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification.” (Al-Lail, Chapter 92 V 18)
“Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do. (Ankaboot chapter 29 verse 45)
Islamic morality is not limited to Muslim society, but it extends to the human society. Islam links the origin of all human beings to a single pair of parents and upholds the principles of equality, justice, and fairness to all human beings regardless of their race, color or faith. Islam respects all lives and treats them with compassion and kindness, whether it be that of human beings or animals.
As a religion of the middle way (wasatiyyah), Islam rejects extremism and emphasizes tolerance, forgiveness, and moderation. The reform of the society begins with the reform of the individual. The essential qualities of a muslim’s character are God-consciousness, truthfulness, trust, sincerity, tolerance, forgiveness, patience, fairness in dealings, brotherhood, love, mercy and generosity. This personality is attainable and was exemplified by the messenger of God, who was sent to perfect moral character. A Muslim has to strive for it with the messenger of God as the best role model.
Allah wants for us a secure and peaceful society. This can only be achieved by upholding the good characters that the God Almighty has enjoined us in the holy Qur’an and the tradition of the messenger of God (May Allah be pleased with him).
The Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him had demonstrated these noble characters to his companions in his relationship with them, with his family, the Jews and Christians, with idol worshippers and even animals. The crisis in our society today is borne out of moral decadence.
To be continued.
