UNILORIN Don, Abikan delivers inaugural lecture, calls for equitable distribution of wealth

Adedimeji Quayyim Abdul-Hafeez

University don and National President of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN), Professor AbdulQadir Abikan has called for a unified global strategy, driven towards just and equitable distribution of wealth in the cause towards financial stability and development.

This call was made at the 206th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Ilorin, held on Thursday, 30th of September, 2021, at the University Auditorium.

The lecture, titled “Not without the owner’s manual: Your right to a share of the global wealth”, had the presence of the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Sulayman Age Abdul-Kareem, legal practitioners, law lecturers, members of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria and Nigeria Bar Association, finance experts and relevant professionals in the academic and banking sectors.

Professor Abikan decried man-made alternatives to distributive wealth, highlighting that riba (usury/interest), dishonesty, inequity, amongst many others, hinders the equitable distribution of wealth.

He mentioned that every human being is entitled to rights to global wealth, substantiating his points with relevant provisions of the Qur’an on human beings appointed by Allah as His vicegerents and managers over the earth.

The don posited that the law is an “effective gatekeeper to the booty of wealth inequality”, in ensuring that global wealth is an entitlement to everybody.

The MULAN President highlighted his contributions in ensuring equitable share of wealth and promoting Islamic banking and finance in Nigeria.

He also enumerated the challenges he faced as a finance practitioner and advised scholars in Islamic finance to desist from the craze for materialism.

Prof. Abikan also reminisced on his own journey on the dual paths of Islamic law and western education, highlighting the contributions of personalities and institutions in his education and life.

He appreciated his family, colleagues and associates for their significant contributions in ensuring that he excelled in his career and endeavors.
