Breaking: Shuaib Salisu bows out, as Prof. Adekoya emerges UMA President

The University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA) has elected Prof. Khalid Adekoya as its new president, ending the four years glorious tenure of Alhaji Shuaib Salisu.

Adekoya, a professor of Cell Biology and Genetics at the University of first choice as UNILAG is fondly called, was announced today, Sunday, at the 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM)/Congress of the association.

The event was held at the Islamic Centre Hall, UNILAG, Akoka, Lagos, and attracted alumni of the school, who praised the excellent leadership qualities and many remarkable achievements of the outgoing President, Alhaji Salisu.

Alhaji Salisu, a two-term president of the association (2018 to 2020; 2020 to 2022), is the immediate former Chief of Staff to the Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun.

Incoming President, Prof Adekoya

Muslim News gathered that the immediate former president is also vying for the senatorial seat of Ogun Central as candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

The alumni therefore urged the incoming President to complement the good work of his predecessor during his two years tenure.

Other executive members

While Alhaji Aliu Akoshile emerged as the Deputy President 1 (Akoka), the duo of Head of Family Medicine Department at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Dr. Abdulmajeed Babatunde Akodu, and Alhaja Mujidat Isiaka of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) were re-elected as Deputy Presidents II (Idi-Araba) and III (Special Duties), respectively.

The immediate former Treasurer, Alhaja Muhidat Bello, who works as a Principal Manager with First Bank of Nigeria (FBN) was elected as the Vice President I (Akoka) while Dr. Azeezat Shopeyin-Dosunmu from LUTH’s Community Medicine Department was re-elected Vice-President II for LUTH.

Outgoing President, Alhaji Salisu

Other re-elected officials include Professor in the Geography Department of UNILAG, Dr. Shakirudeen Odunuga, and Dentsu Nigeria Specialist, Mustapha Kelani, as General Secretary and Assistant General Secretary.

The Nation Head of Motoring Desk and National Secretary of the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN), Alhaji Tajudeen Adebanjo, and Lagos State government’s Physiotherapist employee, Azeezat Quadri, retained their portfolios as the Public Relations Officers (PROs) for Akoka and CMUL.

Other members of the exco who were also re-elected and retained their former portfolios are: Yusuf Babatunde Jamiu (Financial Secretary); KPMG Nigeria Risk Consultant, AbdulKabir Kuye (Internal Auditor); Lagos State University (LASU) School of Communication lecturer, Dr. Ganiyat Tijani-Adenle (Welfare Officers for Akoka).

The newly elected officers include Olokodana Adesalu (Welfare officer, Idi-Araba); Associate Professor of Botany, Dr. Taofeeqah Abosede Adesalu (Treasurer) and Bar. Safiyyullah Oladipo (National Legal Adviser).
