Mr. Seyi Makinde, Oyo State Governor, and his counterpart in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke have declared Wednesday, July 19, 2023, as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Hijrah 1445.
The separate declarations came in recognition of the significance of Hijrah, which marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1445AH.
The announcement was made through statements signed by the Chief of Staff to Mr. Makinde, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, and the Osun State Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Regional Integration and Special Duties, Mr. Mudashiru Oyedeji on Tuesday.
Gov. Makinde’s message conveyed warm greetings and congratulations to the Muslim faithful on the commencement of the New Year, calling on all Muslims to use the occasion to offer prayers for the peace, unity, and sustainability of both Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.
Makinde emphasized the need for unity among all citizens. The governor’s message promotes a shared responsibility for building a strong and inclusive community, encouraging residents to embrace diversity and work towards a common goal.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, said the decision to declare the holiday is a testament to Governor Makinde’s dedication to promoting inclusivity and celebrating religious diversity in Oyo State, adding that it reinforces the state’s commitment to upholding the rights and beliefs of all citizens, and showcases the governor’s resolve to foster an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
On his part, Osun State Permanent Secretary noted that the Governor would preside over a special march parade among the Muslim ummah at the stadium on Saturday to commemorate the new year.
“In commemoration of Hijrah 1445 AH Islamic New Year for all Muslims, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke declared tomorrow, Wednesday, as a public holiday throughout the state.
“While congratulating and wishing the entire Muslim ummah a happy celebration of the new Islamic calendar, the Governor will preside over a special march pass on Saturday at Osogbo township stadium by taking a symbolic salute as part of a series of activities lined up to mark the new Islamic year”, it read.
