UCH rejection of niqab mother: Our baby not readmitted, receiving treatment elsewhere – Father clears the air

* To appear before College Hospital on Monday

Mr. Sobur Opeyemi Rafiu, the father of the 4-day-old baby reportedly rejected by the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, over his mother’s refusal to remove her Niqab (veil), has debunked the report circulating on social media that the baby was later readmitted in the same hospital.

In a Facebook post monitored by Muslim News on Sunday, February 4, Mr. Rafiu debunked the report, saying that those spreading what he termed as ‘rumour’ might have done so to “calm down the people that have expressed concerns about the matter.”

The father who appreciated every kind-hearted individual, group, media and community that have been there for the family during the recent happenings, disclosed that the baby is receiving treatment at another undisclosed hospital, adding that he is getting better.

He noted that the nurses in the now-viral video have already submitted their report to the hospital’s management.

Mr Rafiu disclosed to Muslim News that the UCH management has invited him to the hospital on Monday, February 5 to tell his side of the story.

Read full statement

With a heart full of thanks, I write to appreciate every kind-hearted individual, group and community that have been there for my family and I in the recent happenings of my four-day baby especially our Muslim brothers and sisters.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), the Muslim Media Practitioners, the Muslim Community of Oyo State in general, the UCH Muslim Community, Intelregion news outlet, Muslim News Administrator and all online/social media supporters, we say thank you and Jazaakumu llahu khoiran to you all.

The calls, prayers, intellectual discussions, wise submissions, love and care really mean a lot to us. Alhamdulillaah for saving our dear baby’s life. He is now getting better.

I also want to use this opportunity to debunk the news that has been circulated that the baby was later readmitted in the same hospital, this is not true. Probably, it’s just to calm down the people that were really concerned about the matter. Though after the nurses have already submitted their report according to the hospital’s management, I have also been invited to tell my own side of the story and it is scheduled to hold tomorrow, Monday, 5th February, 2024.

Once again, I say thank you and Jazaakumu llahu khoiran to you all, may Almighty Allah not forsake you all.

Sobur Opeyemi Rafiu
