• Choice of dress a major sin for Muslim women: Ustadh Ahmad
Different sets of alumni of Vanguards Academy on Friday, March 29, converged at their alma mater premises at Odosengolu, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State for the 2024 annual Ramadan tafsir and iftar session.
The event organised under the banner of the Vanguards Academy Old Students Association (VAOSA) also featured the first Qur’an competition and the commissioning of solar streetlights for the school.
In his welcome address, the President of the Association, Mallam Sulaiman Adeyemi Dhikrullah, explained that the Qur’an competition was organised to foster a culture of memorisation of the holy book among Vanguards students.
The competition, Muslim News gathered, was in two categories, including 5 ajzaa and 30 ajzaa.
The winners were handsomely rewarded with prize money, presented by Vanguards CEO, Dr. Zafaran Adeniyi, and the faith-based school’s Principal, Alhaji Luqman Alatishe.
Anifowoshe Muhammad emerged top in the lower category (5 ajzaa) with a cash prize of 50,000 naira. He was followed by Salahudeen Maryam (25,000 naira) as the first runner-up and Adekomaya AbdurRaheem (15,000 naira) as the second runner-up.
Winners of the higher category (30 ajzaa) included: Luqman Ahmad, first position, with 75,000 naira cash award; Ajani Muhammad, second position, with 50,000 naira cash award; and Lawal Faiz, third position, with 25,000 cash award.
Guest lecturer at the tafsir, Ustadh AbdurRaheem Ahmad of 2009 set (G33), urged Muslim women to jettison tight-fitted dresses that exposes their shapes, irrespective of their cost or trends.
He added that women sin by dressing in a suggestive manner that attracts the opposite sex.
Ustadh Ahmad, who is now a lecturer at Iree Polytechnic, Osun State and Director of Abaadilah Arabic and Islamic School educated the audience on the exegesis of Suratul Aa’raf verse 26.
“In Islam, we don’t dress to please people. There are acceptable standards on how both Muslim males and females should appear in public,” he said.
“Wearing dresses that are expensive but show the shape and the ones that are too attractive — all of these should be discouraged among our Muslim women. Women sin when they dress to attract the opposite sex, including wearing perfumes.
This, he postulated, will earn the punishment of Allah. On the other hand, if you dress properly, Allah will reward you.”
A major highlight of the event was the commissioning of a million naira worth of solar streetlights donated to the school by the alumni. The project was commissioned by Dr Adeniyi.
Sweetened Yoghurt by BRG Resources was offered to both students and members of staff of Vanguards, as part of the iftar.
