*As Center marks first anniversary of imparting Islamic knowledge
*Islam has benchmarks for discipline: Ustadh Hanif
The Mudeer (Proprietor) of Daarul-Bushra Center for Arabic Studies and Islam Culture in Ede, Osun State, Ustadh Hanif Bushra has called on Muslim children not to be discouraged from attending Arabic school because of the level of discipline that ensures orderliness and guides against disobedience.
Bushra, however, warns sternly against unguided and indiscriminate use of whips on children and learners, adding that Islam has set some benchmarks to which everyone should adhere strictly.
He expressed the view while speaking with Muslim News during the school’s first anniversary of promoting cultural understanding and impacting Arabic and Islamic knowledge to Muslim youths in Osun and its environs.
Many people have alleged on social media that they stopped attending Arabic Schools, otherwise known as ‘Ile Kewu’ in the Southwest Nigeria because of unguided and incessant thrashing.
They added the act did not only discourage young Muslims from learning the language of the Quran but has also been used as excuse by some to abandon Islam for other religions.
The Mudeer argued that discipline is instrumental to learning and knowing is a thing to which every conscious Muslim should attach a high premium.
He supported his submission with a quote from Suratul Mujadila, Qur’an 58, Verse 11, which says, “Allah will exalt those of you who believe, and those who are given knowledge, in high degrees; and Allah is Aware of what you do.”
“That is the honour and exaltation in stock for the knowledgeable, and it should make every conscious Muslim covet knowledge of the Deen. We must learn about Islam the way Allah and His Prophet established it. It is incumbent on every Muslim,” he noted.
The Ede-Osun State born Arabic teacher noted that the purpose of holding a cane or whip around children is to command orderliness and inculcate discipline.
According to him, “The sole aim of holding a cane or whip is to instill fear and inculcate discipline in children. This is because the mere sight of a whip sends some synapses through the bodies of children and commands orderliness.
“However, Islam has set some benchmark on the retribution of erring children and learners on some offences. In short, the maximum number of strokes which should be given to such children is three, except she/he steals, fornicate or commit a grave sins. Also, the strokes should be given on the hands or legs of the child.
“Whipping should therefore not be a reason for anyone to stop seeking knowledge – both Arabic and Western, not to talk of turning one’s back from Islam. I urge Arabic school owners to be moderate in the discipline of their pupils and I am also using this medium to call on our brothers who have left Islam for other religions to come back. It’s not too late for them to return to Arabic School and Islam, Allah’s ordained religion for mankind.
He concluded that Daarul-Bushra will never downplay the role of discipline at every stage of its teaching and learning processes, from Ibtidahiyah through Hidaadiyah and Hifzul-Qur’an.
He urged every to prioritize and covet the pristine knowledge of Islam.
