Introduction
Today is another Friday, a day when many of us seek out thematic issues to reflect upon and listen to during the sermon. I believe the topic “Islamic Scholars as Surgeons and Butchers: A Comparative Analysis of Two Methodologies” is particularly fitting for our discussion.
In the Quran, Allah emphasizes the importance of compassion and wisdom in guiding others towards righteousness: The Almighty says:“Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.” (Quran 16:125)
Similarly, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) demonstrated empathy and patience in his teachings, famously quoted thus: “Make things easy for the people and do not make things difficult for them, and give them glad tidings and do not repel them.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
These golden teachings underscore the necessity of approaching religious matters with wisdom, patience, and compassion—qualities that are vital for nurturing love for Allah and His deen (religion).
Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher, also valued the pursuit of knowledge with humility and empathy. He stated: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”
The Metaphor of Surgeons and Butchers
Islamic scholars who adhere to the Qur’ānic and Prophetic methodology of compassion and wisdom can be likened to surgeons in a clinical operating room. Surgeons approach each case with precision, care, and a deep understanding of the complexities involved. They carefully and meticulously diagnose, consider all causative factors, and apply their professional knowledge with the utmost skill, aiming to heal and give wellness to sick people. At this juncture, I am compelled to acknowledge the wisdom of Dr. Bilal Asrau, Prof. AbdurRasaq Alaro, Shaykh AbdulRauf Sa’eed, Shaykh Dhikrullah, Shaykh Imam Eleha, Ustadh AbdurRahman Alalubosa, Ustadh AbdulAzeez AbdulHafiz Ariremako among others for their remarkable dexterity in balancing empathy with the realities of Shariah. They teach orthodox knowledge factually, faithfully, and empathetically even if bitter. The unique methodology of the aforementioned scholars makes what seems bitter and difficult easy to accept and swallow by the listening public. These scholars understand that spiritual growth, like physical healing, is a process that requires patience and tailored care, and they embody this approach in their teachings and guidance.
In contrast, scholars who issue extreme, unsolicited, needless, unnecessary, harsh verdicts on issues such as sending Jumu’ah greetings via texts and voices, prohibiting group Adhkar, feasting after returning from hajj, discouraging marriage with members of the Tabligh, and opposing the collection of money (Owo Ikono) by local Alfas at Qur’an graduation ceremonies—without proper consideration of context or empathy—are comparable to butchers in a clinical setting. While butchers play an indispensable role in abattoirs and meat markets, their skills are not suited for the delicate work of a surgeon. When invited into a clinical operating room, their approach, which is effective in a different context, becomes dangerous. Instead of healing, they could cause harm, waste, and destruction due to their lack of the necessary training and precision. Similarly, scholars who lack the proper methodology and issue indiscriminate, rigid verdicts can cause significant spiritual and social damage. Their harshness can alienate followers, sow division, and undermine the very principles that Islam seeks to uphold.
Implications of Harsh Verdicts and Disturbing Preaching
The consequences of harsh verdicts and disturbing preaching are far-reaching. When religious leaders use their platforms to issue rigid and severe rulings without consideration for individual circumstances and the broader context, they risk driving people away from the faith. Such an approach can create an environment of fear, resentment, and division within the community. It can distort the image of Islam, making it appear rigid and unforgiving (Esin Masu Matoo), which is contrary to the compassionate and merciful nature that the Quran and the Sunnah emphasized and encouraged. .
Moreover, disturbing preaching that focuses more on condemnation than on guidance can have a detrimental impact on the community’s spiritual health. It can lead to a culture where followers feel judged and ostracized rather than supported and nurtured in their spiritual journey. This not only weakens the community but also diminishes the influence of religious leadership, as people begin to seek solace and understanding elsewhere.
Valuing the Islamic Methodology
In light of these insights, it becomes clear that the Qur’ānic and Prophetic methodology of compassion and wisdom is not only beneficial but essential for the well-being of the Ummah. By adopting this approach, scholars can foster an environment of understanding, unity, and spiritual growth. They can guide their communities with the precision and care of a surgeon, addressing the unique needs of each individual while maintaining the integrity of Islamic teachings.
This Prophetic model encourages scholars to approach their role as spiritual leaders with humility and compassion, recognizing that their words and actions have the power to either heal or harm. It reminds them that their primary duty is to guide their followers towards a closer relationship with Allah, one that is built on love, understanding, and mutual respect.
Conclusions
As we contemplate the roles of Islamic scholars in our communities, it is vital to remember the Quranic vision of Muslims as “a justly balanced nation (Ummatan Wasatan)” (Quran 2:143), which requires us to uphold justice, moderation, and empathy in all our affairs. The great Islamic philosopher Al-Ghazali advised, “The key to achieving peace of mind and contentment is in moderation in all things, including religious matters.” (Al-Ghazali, Ihya’ Ulum al-Din).
In following the Qur’ānic and Prophetic methodology of compassion and wisdom, scholars not only preserve the integrity of Islamic teachings but also ensure that they nurture the hearts and minds of their followers. This balanced approach fosters unity, compassion, and a deeper connection with Allah. By striving to be like the careful surgeon—precise, patient, and compassionate—scholars can guide the Ummah towards a stronger, more resilient future, where faith is lived with love, compassion and understanding, rather than fear and division.
