Dr Qadhi’s Lekki Khutbah: Jannah is Allah’s gift, cannot be earned

… As US scholar leads Salatul Jumua’h at Lekki Central Mosque

A renowned global scholar, Dr. Yasir Qadhi, who led thousands of Muslim faithful in Salatul Jum’ah (Friday prayer) at the Lekki Central Mosque, Lekki, Lagos says mankind cannot ordinarily earn Jannah by their deeds and sacrifices, adding Jannah (paradise) remains a special gift from Allah that’s granted with His Pleasure and Mercy.

The scholar who is in Nigeria for 1Ummah Convention at Eko Hotel, Lagos therefore called on Muslims not to assume their charity and Salat could earn them the everlasting paradise, saying Allah’s Jannah is too precious to be earned by few minutes of Salat and sundry efforts.

Dr Qadhi was warmly welcomed to Nigeria by the leadership of the Lekki Muslim Ummah (LEMU), led by its President, Dr. AbdulGaniy Labinjo.

During a 24-minute first half of the thought-provoking Khutbah which centered on the exegesis of Surah Al-Kawthar (Qura’n 108), Qadhi, quoting an Hadith, said, “none of you shall earn Jannah by your deeds, even me, my deeds will not earn me Jannah but through Allah’s mercy will encompass me. His mercy will cover me and I will be gifted Jannah.”

He therefore called on Muslims not to assume or rely only on their charity, Salat and good deeds alone, urging them to pray for Allah’s pleasure and mercy.

“Rather, these sacrifices (charity, Salat, Zakat) demonstrate to Allah that we want His mercy and that token demonstration is wanted by Allah, stressing that Allah gifts us Jannah as a mercy from Him not because we deserve or have earned it.

“When Allah has given people gift, what do we do? We show thanks. How do we show thanks? ‘So pray and sacrifice to your Lord ˹alone˺”. Q108:2.’ We should worship Allah from the depth of our hearts and benefits many people as much as we can. This is what Allah wants from us”, he added.

Dr. Qadhi, a Pakistani-American Muslim scholar and theologian, is the lead speaker at the one-day event and is expected to speak on “Stories of Relevance from the Seerah” and “Understanding and Responding to Global Injustice: Lessons from Gaza” at different sessions.

Other international scholars expected at the Lagos Convention today Saturday are Sheikh Ammar Al-Shukry, who will be speaking on: “From Helplessness to Strength: Maintaining Muslim Identity and Inclusivity in a Fragmented Global Community” while Sheikh Mufti Menk shall be speaking on “Embracing Allah, the Ultimate Provider: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Divine Assurance”.
