Pathway to Excellence: 39 contestants vie for final spots at Lagos Qur’an Competition Bootcamp

Adrenaline rush, as participants and their supporters anticipate the Lagos Qur’an Competition Bootcamp opening on Saturday, 22nd February 2025, at the Shamsi Adisa Thomas Central Mosque Hall, Old Secretariat, Ikeja.

The Qur’an memorization and recitation hub, organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit (MSSN Lagos) is a meticulous scrutiny that will determine the finalists for the prestigious Lagos Qur’an Competition, popularly known as #ReciteLagos.

Muslim News gathered that 39 young Qur’an memorisers from across Lagos State who emerged victorious at the Zonal stages in five, 10, and 30 juz (complete Qur’an) categories will compete for the coveted spot at the semi-final of the competition slated for tomorrow, Saturday, February 22. Time is 10:00am.

“15 contestants (7 males, 8 females) for five Juz, 13 contestants (7 males, 6 females) for 10 Juz while 11 contestants will vie for the top spot in the complete Qur’an (30 juz) category,” said Imam  Sulaimon Dhikrullah, the chairman local organising committee of the competition.

Imam Dhikrullah noted that Saturday’s boot camp is going to be final for some categories and semi-final for some categories.

According to him, “It’s going to be a final for 5 and 10 Juz categories but the winners will be announced at the grand finale, slated for Sunday, 9th March 2025, at the JF Ade Ajayi Auditorium, University of Lagos.

Speaking further, the Chairman local organising committee noted that “For the complete Qur’an category, there will also be a final for the female memorisers but they will be announced at the grand finale as well.

He, however, stated that it’s going to be semi-final for the male participants, adding that the four male finalists who emerge winners at the semi-final will compete and showcase their Qur’an memorisation prowess before thousands of audience that will attend the grand finale.

The grand finale of the Qur’an competition with the theme, “Unfailing Compass” is organised in honour of the late Alhaji Lateef Adegbite.

Among the dignitaries expected at the event include the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Kadri Hamzat, while a senior lecturer from Al-Hikmah University, Shaykh (Dr.) Sanusi Lafiagi, is expected to deliver the lecture alongside Dr Abdullah Shuaib, Lead Consultant, AS & Associates.

The Chairman of the competition’s organising committee noted that MSSN Lagos remains committed to promoting the study and understanding of the Qur’an among Muslim students and youths in Lagos State.

“This bootcamp is a testament to our dedication to nurturing Quranic talent and fostering a generation of devoted scholars,” he added.”

According to the Amir (President) of MSSN Lagos, Kamoldeen Abiona, the bootcamp serves as a critical evaluation period, assessing not only the participants’ memorisation prowess but also their recitation accuracy and other technicalities.

He said, “The bootcamp focuses on refining memorisation techniques, improving tajweed (rules of recitation) and deepening, the participants’ understanding of the Quranic verses. The competition is not merely a test of memory but a celebration of the profound connection between the memorisers and the Holy Qur’an.

“The selection process for the grand finale will be highly competitive, with only the most skilled and dedicated memorisers advancing. The bootcamp is designed to ensure that the finalists possess the highest level of proficiency and are ready to inspire audiences with their exceptional Quranic recitations,” he added.
