Muslim group to Buhari: Declare state of emergency over insecurity now

Al-Furqan, a group of Muslim professionals in Nigeria, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately declare a national state of emergency to tackle the rising spate of kidnappings, banditry and other forms of insecurity in the land.

This was contained in a communique issued after a meeting of the non-governmental, non-profit and non-political group, and signed by one of its national coordinators, Mallam Nurudeen Asunogie.

According to the organisation, while congratulating President Buhari over his recent electoral success, it promised to support and pray for his continuous success in office.

The Muslim group also said it has commenced a process of ‘Agenda Setting’ for Nigeria, as responsible citizens of the country.

“The first and most critical responsibility of Government is security. Your Excellency (President Buhari), it is not just that security has broken down everywhere in Nigeria, it is true to say we are in a structural civil war and widespread anarchy is just a matter of days.

“Your Excellency, Nigerians are right now too depressed to understand condemnations of killings and kidnappings everywhere. What Nigerians want is action. It is time to declare a State of Emergency.

“It is time to give the heads of security agencies a 40-day ultimatum to discover, arrest and do the needful to the well-known sponsors of these crimes and completely stop insecurities of all forms, failing which they should be removed and prosecuted,” Asunogie said.

He assured that Nigerians are solidly behind Mr. President and that God is with him as Al-Furqan continues to pray for his survival, safety and triumph over all forces of darkness.
