Ogun Muslim Council lauds govt over Ibara mosque demolition reversal, eyes Qur’an competition hosting rights

The Ogun State Muslim Council (OMC) has commended the state government for halting the planned demolition of the Ibara Housing Estate Central Mosque in Abeokuta, describing the intervention as a welcome relief to the Muslim community.

This was contained in a communiqué issued by the Council’s Secretary-General, Asiwaju Kamal’deen Akintunde (Esq.), following its general meeting held on Sunday, November 9, 2025.

Muslim News reports that the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority had earlier issued a seven-day quit notice to the mosque’s management, threatening to demolish the over 25-year-old structure — a move that drew widespread concern from Muslims within and outside the state.

Following the intervention, Asiwaju Akintunde expressed gratitude to the government and advised the mosque’s management to urgently regularise its title documents in order to obtain permanent approval and avoid future threats.

On community development, the Council accepted a proposal from the Ogun Standing Committee on Musabaqah (OSCOM) to mobilise support and stakeholders for Ogun State to host the 42nd National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in 2027.

The Council also announced a strategic partnership with the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN) to organise free medical outreach initiatives across the state, focusing on early detection and prevention of illnesses.

As part of its educational support initiatives, OMC ratified the nomination of two outstanding students –Adegboye Rahmat Adedayo of Olabisi Onabanjo University and Egunsola Hafsah Omolola of Yakubu Gowon University, as recipients of the prestigious Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Female Medical Scholarship facilitated by MUSWEN.

The meeting reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to unity, the protection of Islamic education, and development across Ogun State.

It also confirmed the continued participation of its Secretary-General and Assistant Secretary-General in the Central Working Committee and General Purpose Committee of MUSWEN, respectively, to ensure Ogun’s voice remains active in regional Islamic affairs.
