Jigawa First Lady launches environmental advocacy initiative, seeks urgent action on waste crisis

The First Lady of Jigawa State, Hajiya Hadiza Umar Namadi has raised concerns over Nigeria’s growing waste management crisis, calling for urgent action to instil environmental responsibility among the younger generation.

Speaking on Friday at the launch of an environmental advocacy initiative spearheaded by the Environmental Club and Environmental Society for a cleaner and greener Jigawa, Hajiya Namadi stressed the importance of engaging students in the fight against environmental degradation.

“Nigeria today is facing a serious waste management crisis, driven largely by environmental mismanagement and poor waste disposal practices,” she said, adding, “Our students must be encouraged to take ownership of their environment and lead the charge in keeping it clean, safe, and sustainable for all.”

The new campaign, supported by the Jigawa State Ministry of Environment and the Rural Health Initiative (RHI), aims to reduce waste through reuse and recycling, while instilling a culture of environmental consciousness among students.

“This initiative is not just about environmental sanitation; it is about shaping a new generation with a deep sense of responsibility towards our environment,” she noted.

Hajiya Namadi expressed her strong belief that empowered youths, equipped with the right knowledge and orientation, can serve as powerful agents of change.

“This is a crucial step toward building a cleaner Jigawa and contributing to a greener Nigeria,” she added, reaffirming her administration’s commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation.
