Vice President Kashim Shettima and Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Friday joined thousands of Muslim faithful to observe Eid al-Fitr prayers at the Ramat Square Eid Ground in Maiduguri, despite heightened security measures.
Muslim News gathered that the state had experienced multiple bomb blasts in the days leading up to Eid, which killed over 23 people and injured hundreds. Yet, the threats did not deter thousands of worshippers from gathering at the main prayer ground and other designated sites across the state.
Security was visibly heightened, with authorities restricting tricycle movements between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., although some operators were later seen on major roads after the prayers.
The two-Rakaat congregational prayers, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, were conducted peacefully under tight security across Maiduguri.
In his Sallah message shortly after the sermon, the Vice President called for unity, peaceful coexistence, and continued prayers for national development.
He reassured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and emphasized that the fight against insurgency would continue with renewed focus.
Senator Shettima also prayed for the victims of recent attacks in Borno and other parts of the country.
The prayers were led by the Imam Idaini of Borno, Sheikh Shettima Mamman Saleh, who urged Muslims to uphold the spiritual lessons of Ramadan.
He encouraged the faithful to give Zakat al-Fitr to the needy and to observe six voluntary fasts in the month of Shawwal for additional blessings.
Governor Zulum called on residents to sustain the spirit of devotion and work together to rebuild a secure, peaceful, and prosperous Borno.
He lauded the resilience and cooperation of citizens in supporting peace-building efforts despite years of insurgency.
The Eid prayer was attended by prominent dignitaries, including the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi; Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur; Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume; Minister of State for Regional Development, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan; members of the National and State Assemblies; government officials; and party leaders.
