* Rights groups decry alleged failure of law enforcement and call for transparent investigation
The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) and Amnesty International (AI) Nigeria have condemned the brutal killing of a Muslim teacher, Ummulkhair, who was set ablaze by a mob in Maraban Jos, along the Kaduna–Zaria highway on 21 June 2026, following allegations of child kidnapping.
The two organisations, in separate but strongly aligned statements, described the incident as a disturbing reflection of Nigeria’s worsening mob violence culture and a serious failure of law enforcement to protect lives and uphold due process.
Muslim News gathered that the Islamic teacher was lynched on Sunday afternoon after some residents accused her of child stealing, an allegation that quickly spread through the community and triggered a mob attack that resulted in her being set ablaze.
‘Organised savagery’: MPAC reacts
In a statement signed on Tuesday by MPAC Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, the group described the killing as “barbaric” and “organised savagery enabled by rumour, fear, and institutional failure,” insisting that Ummulkhairi was taken from lawful custody based on unverified allegations, before being denied due process and brutally killed.
“This was not justice. This was not community protection,” Disu said, adding, “No allegation, no matter how sensitive, justifies mob execution.”
The organisation warned that the incident reflects a dangerous erosion of civic order, where suspicion and rumours are allowed to override legal processes, leading to extrajudicial killings.
MPAC also raised concern over conflicting accounts surrounding the role of security operatives in the final moments before the killing, noting that while official statements deny wrongdoing, “credible narratives circulating publicly raise disturbing questions.”
It called for a thorough, independent and transparent investigation into the conduct of all security personnel and community actors involved, including the full chain of custody that led to her death.
Amnesty: possible police complicity must be investigated
Amnesty International also condemned the killing in a statement earlier published on its verified social media handles on Monday, describing it as a horrific example of mob violence that reflects the failure of Nigerian authorities to protect the right to life.
The organisation raised serious concern over eyewitness accounts alleging that police officers at the station may have handed Ummulkhairi over to the mob when a large crowd reportedly invaded the police facility.
According to those accounts cited by Amnesty, officers on duty allegedly brought the victim out and released her to the crowd, who then killed her and set her body ablaze.
Amnesty said this, if confirmed, would represent a grave failure of law enforcement duty and a breakdown of public protection responsibilities.
The organisation stressed that the Nigeria Police Force must urgently investigate the allegation.
Rising wave of mob violence
Both organisations warned that the killing is not an isolated case but part of a growing national trend of mob justice fueled by rumours, misinformation, and weak institutional response.
Amnesty International said mob violence is increasingly becoming normalised across Nigeria, with victims often targeted based on suspicion or hearsay rather than evidence.
The organisation added that repeated failures to investigate and prosecute perpetrators have emboldened mob actors, while weakening public confidence in the justice system.
MPAC similarly warned that the rise of “instant punishment” culture poses a direct threat to national stability and constitutional order, stressing that when accusations are treated as guilt, “the foundations of justice have already been undermined.”
Systemic failure of law enforcement
Amnesty International accused Nigerian authorities of a long-standing failure to prevent, manage, and investigate mob killings, describing it as a symptom of weak and corrupt institutions.
It noted that the inability of law enforcement agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, to bring perpetrators to justice has effectively empowered mobs to continue committing killings with little fear of consequences.
MPAC echoed this concern, stating that the legitimacy of the state depends on its ability to protect all citizens, including those accused or unpopular.
Calls for action
Both MPAC and Amnesty International therefore called on the Federal government to take urgent and decisive action.
The organisations urged authorities to immediately identify, arrest, and prosecute all individuals involved in the lynching, stressing that accountability is essential to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
They also demanded a credible, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing, including a thorough review of the role played by law enforcement officers during the incident.
In addition, both groups called for the public release of the findings of any investigation, arguing that transparency is necessary to restore public trust in the justice system and reassure citizens that due process will be upheld.
MPAC and Amnesty International further urged authorities to provide support, protection, and restitution for the bereaved family, including the children left behind by the deceased, who they said are now facing trauma and loss.
They also called for stronger state-led measures to address the rising trend of mob violence, misinformation-driven attacks, and unlawful detention practices across the country.
Conclusion
The organisations warned that continued silence or inadequate responses would deepen public mistrust and embolden further acts of mob violence across the country.
They stressed that justice for Ummulkhairi must be swift, transparent, and uncompromising, warning that Nigeria risks further erosion of the rule of law if urgent reforms are not taken.
