No fewer than 25 secondary school students benefitted from a 3-day intensive training on Python and Web Development at the just concluded first phase of the ongoing 106th edition of the Islamic Vacation Course (IVC).
The program, which ran from Monday to Wednesday, December 24-26 at the HCDC, Epe, Lagos, venue of the annual camping programme, was created to train students on coding in line with current global trends.
The Amir of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit (MSSN LSAU), Dr Saheed Ashafa said in a chat with Muslim News that the initiative, the first of its kind, will not only empower the students, but will also help them become self-dependent.
“We want to create jobs for our students. We want them to be ICT-compliant. That’s why our Web Department came up with this program on coding and we strongly believe that at the end of the 3-day practical session, the participants will be able to work on their own with little or no supervision and impact the society positively”, he added.
Participants were drawn from the 44 Area Councils of the Area Unit within Lagos State.
The web team, led by Abdullah AbdulKabir and Hassan Tijani ascertained that the programme is aimed at empowering the Muslim youths and building their potentials towards understanding emerging trends in the 21st century.
Abdullah said: “The world is moving fast with different technologies invented on a daily basis. It is our belief that this program will help to further arouse the interest of more students in the sciences at secondary schools, thereby boosting the collective self-dependence of the nation in the area of Science and Technology.”
Tijani added that: “According to our plan, this program will continue after the Camp. We therefore urge the students to continue their practice at home and make more research. This is because Muslims must not be left behind in the scheme of things in the modern world.”
One of the beneficiaries, Hassan Ashraf, a first timer from Agboyi Ketu Area Council commended the organisers, adding that he had benefitted immensely from the training.
Another delegate from Igbogbo Area Council, Ikorodu, Lagos,
Ganiu Nurudeen said he enjoyed the class and was grateful for being part of the attendees. Ganiu, who has a flair for Web Development promised to pursue knowledge and excellence in coding till he achieves his dreams in that regard.
He urged leaders of MSSN to continue the good initiative, as it will attract more students to Camp.
He said: “It is advised that MSSN LSAU continues the program for empowerment sake and getting more members. For instance, if I should tell my friends that there is a coding class in Camp, they will love to come in order to learn”.
The second phase of the Camp for higher institutions and the working class has commenced today, Thursday, December 27, 2018 and will last till January 1, 2019.
